end of may. as summer gets up there is a tendancy to have small thunder storms running down the valleys and these can extend into Sept
I never visited in May, but we have visited in late April once, late Sept. once and many times in October, from the start to the end of October. Late Sept and early Oct. are best for weather, less crowds, etc. in my opinion and from our experiences, plus many cable cars which normally don't start running until early/mid June are most likely open in September. Between the two choices, September would get my vote.
