Unless things have changed, you must have an official guide from Auschwitz.
You can hire a private guide to take you to Auschwitz but then an official guide tours with you.
P.S. I do have the name of a very good guide that will drive you there. She will also walk with you through the camps with the official guide.
I used her for a day tour (not for Auschwitz) and I would use her again. She has her own car.
I will find the exact email and send it when I get my hand on it if you are interested.
Let me also tell you that in Poland, as I understand it, there are drivers that will take to from place to place and there are also guides that will take you and give guided commentary in and around sights.
Sher, thanks. I would like the name of the guide please. I believe that they allow private guides from what I've read. In any event, I don't want to be with a large crowd tied to a bus schedule or tour schedule. I would rather take as much time as I need, be it longer or shorter, and that's the reason for the private guide.
I would think that this email should still be valid.

I have to say that I hired Marta for a full day of touring (not Auschwitz) and she was fantastic. But she does do that tour also.
I did not hire her for the camps as I took a tour from Krakow. It was just ok.
If you have time try to visit the Schlinder Factory Museum. Only a small part is about Schlinder but the rest is a history of Poland during the Nazi occupation. I thought it was wonderful. Allow enough time. It is pretty extensive.
I loved Krakow.
Sher, thanks. I have emailed Marta and will plan to go to the Schindler Factory.
