aug 2-aug 28 italy family of 4-want a great trip...ideas...

Hi

I'm planning a trip to Italy (Aug 2 to Aug 28) with my two kids (13 and 15) and wife. so far the plan is:

Arrival Rome Aug 2 from Montreal
spend few days in Rome - looking at monastery for cheaper accommodations(family 4)
rent a car and drive north to Napoli, avelino area (spend 3-4 days)
drive to Vasto, Adriatic coast (renting apartment 2 weeks)
will do day trips from there
then drive up towards to Venice for flight out and drop off car.

Questions:

(1) need to cycle as im preparing for Ironman race. Bike rentals not easy to find on internet...any ideas.

(2) cheap accommodations in Rome (or between Vasto and Venice for family of four

(3) ideas of itinerary between Vasto and Venice (3-4 days)

(4) ..any ideas of cool, fun day trips from Vasto

(5) anyone ever drive in Italy in august....heard different opinions on that one.

Any help on the above areas would be greatly appreciated. This is our first family trip to Europe and i want to make a great one.

thx

I have never visited south of Florence in August, but in the parts of the north where I have driven, it has been fine.

Depending on how much you enjoy sweltering weather, if you are flying out of Venice anyway, I highly recommend visiting the Dolomites. Since you are training for Ironman, I'm going to make a guess that your family is also fairly active. The hiking and scenery in the Dolomites is truly wonderful, plus very low key and friendly. Bolzano and Alpi di Suizi are great places to consider.

First, you need a good map. Naples is south of Rome. Second, it would help us help you if we knew what kinds of things you enjoy and want to do. Why Avelino? Why Vasto - for the beach? I don't know either of them or what to "do" there but you must have an idea why you chose them. Help us and someone here may be able to help you.

Everyone in Italy (and the rest of Eurole) takes a vacation in August so the roads are likely to be very crowded at that time - you may do more sitting than driving!

It would be helpful if you could give us an actual cost per night you can pay for your family of four--your idea of "cheap" may not be ours.

your right..i meant South...my wife has family south of Rome. Still setting things up to maybe see them.

we know there are crowds in august but don't have choice for the dates.

IN vasto we rented family apartment for two weeks. We were thinking of doing day trips from there thus the reason for car rental. Figured numerous train transfer etc would end more costly being four and less flexible than a car.

as for interests ..We are active family, like outdoors, hiking, swimming, running etc. Also want to expose kids to architecture, history of area and we love good food.

thx for the bike tips and dolomite suggestion..looking into them.

budget(accommodation between vasto and venice)...figure under 100 euros per night for family would be reasonable.,.of course less even better. we also don't mind camping but wont have gear with us.
