ATMs in Small Irish Towns?
I'll be going to Ireland for 10 in two weeks. We are only going to be in the smaller towns of Ireland---Doolin, Dromoland Castle, Kenmare,Ardmore, Kilkenny, Cahir, and Bunratty. Other than Dromoland, we are staying at small B&B's. Are there ATM's in those small towns, or do I need to take more cash?

Hi:
Doolin could be the only problem. For quite a while, there was no bank in town. I believe that is still the case. There was talk that some of the post offices would get ATMs but, the last I heard, Doolin does not have an ATM. The nearest would be Lahinch or Ennistymon. All of the other places are much larger than Doolin and have plenty of banking options.
Have fun!

Other than Doolin, I wouldn't even call most of those "small towns". In Ireland a "small town" is a church, two houses and a pub. Most of those are pretty sizeable "cities" as Ireland goes. I also remember seeing ATM's (but I assume ones that have a fee) at a number of tourist attractions.

a lot of shops (newsagents, supermarkets, etc) now have in-store ATMs. You can also find them occasionally in pubs (not sure that that's such a good idea!!). You shouldn't have too many problems finding places to get money!

I believe that it was Lahinch that has the ATM which I used last September. I was surprised that the next town over with the spas did not have a bank/atm. Doolin is very card friendly, though, and Lahinch is only thirty minutes away via the Cliffs' road. Enjoy

Most ATMs are attached to bank buildings. There are also sited in some supermarkets and grocery stores, which often double-up as gas stations in rural areas. Some non-bank ATMs make an additional charge, around 3 euro per withdrawal. It's rather common to find a machine (often the only one in town) out of cash or otherwise out of service, so it's best to stock up when you see a working one. Lahinch has two ATMs - one next to tourist office and another located inside a Centra supermarket. The latter was out of order when I visited in August.

There were a lot of ATMs, but wojazz3 had the goods about Doolin. I've checked to see if things have changed, because sometimes SPARS move in.
FYI, as a cyclist, I depended on SPARS, a sort of British Isles 7/11, for my ATM needs. We were told there were not ATMs on the Aran Islands, for example, but have a SPAR (they did) had ATM.
My search of SPARS Ireland shows nothing in Doolin. Just make sure you've cashed up before you get there.

We are just back from Ireland, and although sometimes there are ATMs everywhere, other times you simply cannot find one, or the place is closed, or it is out of money. I would err on the side of caution and take extra cash.

You can never be certain that there will be a working ATM in a small town anywhere in the world, including western Europe. Some very small places don't have any, and some towns have only one or two that could be out of money or out of order. Most towns do have ATMs, but not all the very small places do--it's not always cost effective to have an ATM in a real small place.
