Are there general problems with using an American ATM card in central/eastern Europe, especially in Bratislava or Ljubjana? Other places I may be going include Prague, Budapest and Krakow (I'm assuming it's fine in those places). I bank with Citibank and will probably also open a small HSBC account.
Just wondering, because an article on Travel and Lesiure's website suggested that ATMs generally don't accept foreign bank cards in Ljubjana.

Had no trouble using my Washington Mutual debit card in Budapest...hope that helps and they only charged me 1%.
No problems in Budapest or Prague. Just make sure your ATM card is linked to your checking account.
topping for Bratislava and Ljubajana info in particular
And no problem in Krakow.
ttt ... please help with info about Bratislava or Ljubjana if you've been there. Thanks!
Just got back from Bratislava no problems at all!
I used Google for Visa ATM Location and was given http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/jsp/SearchPage.jsp/.
Google also found me www.mastercard.com/atmlocator/index.jsp -
Then at http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=CityBank+ATM+location&btnG=Search&meta= I read that in addition to National City ATMs, I can also use any ATM with a STAR® or PLUS® logo, and found the needed link:
“Locate a PLUS ATM worldwide PLUS ATM Locator ”. When I keyed in my own postcide it gave me the bank at the foot of our hill, with a note that it is good for Visa and for Plus.
ATMs are common in all the countries you have named. I always take two cards, so that if I lose one I can live on the other.
