When we were last in Italy 2 years ago, we were able to find ATM's that took our cards without the new security "chip." Our credit union does not issue the cards with the chips.

Just wondering if, in the last two years, more and more machines are only taking the newer chipped cards. Recommendations?

From my own experience you are still going to find an ATM which will take a debit/check card. I'd be interested in knowing which Italian cities have ATMs which do NOT accept them

I have no chip in my card and it worked last month in every ATM I used. If it doesn't work it's most likely an ATM not in the network your bank uses rather than the absence of the chip. Just try another ATM.

Our ATM/debit non-chip card worked everywhere in 10 countries, including Italy, last year, not one problem anywhere.

It's not ATM machines that have a problem with non-chip-and-pin cards, but rather things like ticket machines at train stations and at toll booths. You shouldn't have any issues with your regular ATM debit card in Italy.

Chip and Pin has more to do w/ using debit/credit cards to make <i>purchases</i>. AFAIK all cash/ATM machines will accept magnetic strip debit cards.

Some automated machines - like train station ticket machines, unmanned petrol stations, etc. do require chip&PIN cards . . .

But getting cash from an ATM - no problem.

Do European ATM cards even have a chip & pin? I know credit cards do, but wonder about ATM or debit cards.

In our trips to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and France over the past 20 months, we have not had 1 issue getting cash from ATM machine, anywhere. We use both an plain ATM card and a debit card.

IF you have a problem with one machine, just try another.

For now, there's no problem. Be reminded to use only ATM's either attached to a bank or which clearly indicate they are owned by a bank as the two shared teller networks, cirrus (mc) and plus (visa) prohibit banks who are members of these associations (all of them) from charging a fee for use of an ATM by any out of that country debit/ATM card. (The only fees allowed are from your bank and of course smart consumers make sure they use an ATM/debit card which has the proper charge for accessing your money i.e. $0 like in zero. I've heard a people using banks which charges as much as $5 for a cash withdrawal. Crazy). Some privately owned ATM's get around this and charge an additional fee.

Now what the future holds? The eu is very concerned about the insecurity of the antiquated Americans cards and while nothing is particularly imminent, there are rumblings all the time that the eu, in its never ending quest to control all aspects of life in the eu, is thinking of imposing bans on the use of magnetic strip cards including at ATM's. As I said, though, nothing is particulasrly imminent as of now.

@DebitNM European (or at least Dutch) ATM/debit-cards do have chip&pin. For payments with your debit card in the Netherlands, more and more you are asked to use the chip instead of the magnetic card.
