ATM passwords in Europe

I have been told by my Bank that I need to change my ATM password to 4 digits (no leading zeros) in order to use it in Europe. Is this something new?

No, it's been this way for years.

it doesn't seem to apply to all atms in all countries, some people report it being necessary, others do not. I'd go ahead and change it.

This has been the norm since ATMs first started showing up. I have read/heard anecdotal reports that longer PINs now work - but have not tested it. I think it is prudent to just have a 4 digit PIN to be on the safe side . . . . .

No ColeraineCutie

My pin in the UK was 4 digits
In the US it's 6 digits.

Colerainecutie: it actually depends on your bank and/or the ATM system. Some mandate 4 digits, some 6 digits, some give you flexibility to set your own number, and so forth. My own PIN happens to be 4 digits but my bank allows anything from 4 to 8 digits.

What a sheltered life I've led- at all the banks I've banked at, I've only ever had 4-digit PINs. It's somewhat boggling my mind they could be any different... At least this make my mom's story about her student's card not working overseas b/c the PIN was too long make sense... Wow.
