This has been the norm since ATMs first started showing up. I have read/heard anecdotal reports that longer PINs now work - but have not tested it. I think it is prudent to just have a 4 digit PIN to be on the safe side . . . . .

Colerainecutie: it actually depends on your bank and/or the ATM system. Some mandate 4 digits, some 6 digits, some give you flexibility to set your own number, and so forth. My own PIN happens to be 4 digits but my bank allows anything from 4 to 8 digits.

What a sheltered life I've led- at all the banks I've banked at, I've only ever had 4-digit PINs. It's somewhat boggling my mind they could be any different... At least this make my mom's story about her student's card not working overseas b/c the PIN was too long make sense... Wow.
