A fast way is to take the train that runs through Athens and directly to the port. It stops across the street from the port. Cost is minimal. It might take . . . 15 minutes from the area near Syntagma to Piraeus.

If luggage is a major factor, maybe a taxi? Might cost a little more, but it might be worth it.

I agree with the above. The depot isn't very well marked. As you walking away from the dock, head diagonally left across the parking lot (if I remember correctly), then cross the street and head into a building down the stairs. We did this with our luggage. There are, of course, lots of taxis around but we couldn't find one that was willing to take us for the proper fare. One even quoted five times what it should have been! I preferred not to be ripped off so we took the train. It's quick too. Can't remember the price, but you may want to make sure you have change on hand.

I agree with the other posts. Piraeus isn't very far from Athens, and the metro system is very convenient. I believe there is a stop near Syntagma Square in central Athens. The metro will take you right to the port.

I'd take a taxi to Piraeus from the airport. Takes around 40 minutes although that can depend on what time of day you will be travelling.

Bill's suggestion is a good one as the service from, say, Omonia Square to Piraeus is frequent and cheap. However, Omonia is in the city centre and you will have to make your way there from the airport. Again, I'd take a taxi especially if you have a lot of luggage and time is on your side.

Looking to take the metro from Syntagma Square changing at Monastiraki to Piraeus. What is the duration of that trip and the cost for an adult?

Will be doing this twice on day-trips to Aegean and Hydra. How soon should one arrive in Piraeus if looking to purchase same-day ferry tickets and how far is the Piraeus metro stop to the Hellenic Ferry?

If you take the Metro you'll still have to make your way to the cruise ship dock from the metro station, a distance of about 1/2 mile. Take a taxi and avoid the hassle.

20-30 minutes from Syntaggma to Piraeus, cost 1.40 euro/person one way.

For both islands you will take the ferry or flying dolphin from the port of Piraeus, not the cruise ship dock.

Please calculate 45 minutes to get to Piraeus from Syntagma Square, where you can buy the tickets before the departure.

It should be a 10 minutes walk from the metro station to the dock where ferries and flying dolphins are departing to the Saronic Gulf islands.

If you wish to take a flying dolphin, i would recommend a reservation, especially in the high season.

OK, listen, it is not that complicated. If you are unfamiliar with the area, take a taxi so you don't have to drag your luggage and figure out where to go. Just ask the driver the cost before you get in the taxi. Is it really worth "pitting your skills" for 5 euros? I have not found Greek taxi drivers to be "punters", but rather, regular working guys - and often very helpful.

i will have to agree with fossil41, some taxi drivers in Athens and Piraeus will try to overcharge tourists, since they don't know the are and how much a normal charge would be,
They will also try to overcharge locals, by using devices that manipulate the taximeter... I see it occasionally on the local news, when they get arrested.... They exist !!
Always ask for a receipt, and write down the plate number of the vehicle if you feel you got overcharged.

As of Jan. the 12th a new law in Greece will give you the right to just walk away in restaurants, shops, taxis etc, without paying, if you haven't received a receipt

Whilst this not Athens i landed in Tunis and once out front
of airport taxi guys started offering $20 into town and my
hotel said pay no more than $5 so i refused and let them
know the bus was aprox $1 or $2 and i would find the stop
No bus from airport was the cry so i walked twd where i
believed it was and watched as one driver slipped away &
pulled up next to me -$7 he said and in i got
Incidently i took bus back to airport [the one that didnt
exsist]when leaving 1 jd or about $2 australian

well i could tell you many stories about taxi drivers that overcharged me... in Italy, Greece, Bulgaria but also in countries where i wouldn't expect it, like Holland and Belgium

If we tentatively schedule a round trip from Piraeus to Aegina on Friday, May 17...how dicey will it be to get tickets for a flying dolphin at the port prior to embarking?

It shouldn't be any problem at all.
May is still a very quiet month, and the flying dolphins would most probably be empty.
