Athens to Mycena, is it worth it?

Just wondering if people have been to Mycenae, and around the pelopenesse area. My questions are:
1. how does one get there, and how long and $$ does it take? Can it be done in 1 day out from Athens, me and 2 other buddies are planning on using Athens as a central hub and do excursions outside. We're leaving in early Oct.
2. How safe is Greece in general for Americans nowdays. We won't be with any travel tour group, just on our own. Is there a lot of anti-american feelings?

thanks.

Hi,
When ever I have been to Greece I have been treated with respect and I always have sooo much fun. There seem to be demonstrations at the University in Athens on a regular basis, and sometimes they are antiAmerican, but they last about 1 hour and if you are not near the university you do not know what is going on.

Please go to Mycenae. It is near Naflion. I would do a stay over in Naflion as it is such a wonderful town and worth an overnight. But if you rent a car you can drove there and back to Athens in one day. It will be long trip, but doable. Have fun!!

Mycenae is an extraordinary place - I highly reccommend that you go - particularly if you have any interest at all in ancient history and archaelogical sites. You can take a bus to Nafplion from Athens and change for Mycenae. Nafplio is a great place to explore and in which to spend the night.
I hope you go.

Our family just returned from travelling all over Greece, and we could not believe how friendly the Greek people were to us Americans. On a hike from Oia to Fira on Santorini, we stopped at a roadside stand for water, and the owner fixed us all fresh orange juice and refused payment. We had that kind of hospitality repeatedly.

I really enjoyed Mycenae but was on a tour and didn't have enough time there. I would love to have been there on my own and been able to take my time. Very interesting place.
