Can this be done via public transportation? If not, what would be the most efficient method?
Much obliged...bdj

Monemvasia is too far away !!!! about 300 km
The only public transportation would be a KTEL bus, there are direct buses from Athens to Monemvasia running on a daily basis.
>>Athens to Monemvasia and back....in a day? <<
That is nearly 5 hours . . . each way! Not a doable day trip by any mode of transport.
I live in Athens and have been to Monemvazia twice i agree that 1 day is not enough, 3 day minimum ,lots to see and the distance is like 4hours by car for just 1 way.
It's only possible if you can persuade Scotty to beam you there and back!
ditto for public transportation....it is even slower than car. You will probably have to switch or be delayed in Tripoli and then again in Sparta.

There are direct buses from Athens to Monemvasia, there is no need to change anywhere.

Monemvassia is worth 2 days. You cannot do it in one. I stayed at the Malvasia a few years ago and I loved it. There may be one direct bus a day from Athens but usually you have to change in Sparta. If you had time, you could go to Sparta and see Mystras (spend the night) and then go on to Monemvasia the next day and spend a couple of nights.
I think the OP has moved on and isn't coming back to this thread.
He's started a couple of others: http://www.fodors.com/community/europe/monenvasia-how-many-days.cfm
