Vouliagmeni will be more low-key, quieter, and you have beaches available.
You can take taxis into Athens to sight- see if you wish. If you have serious sightseeing to do in Athens, however, I would prefer to be staying in town so I can pop back to the hotel to change clothes or drop off packages and be out again in a few minutes if I wish.
Your call.
i would choose athens if your hotel is close to the plaka area where you can walk to most places. traveling on greek highways & city streets can be a hair raising experience.taxi from airport to plaka district is approx $7 to 9 & i believe vouliageni may be a little further out.buses can be quite crowded at busy times ( they jam them in the aisles). i believe you would be spending most of your time in athens anyway so why not just stay there. the city has many wonderful things to see & do. sound & light show is nice, plaka w/shops & restaurants, monastraki (sp ?) museums, and always the acropolis. check if any entertaiment is being held at the theater on the acropolis, if so, try for tickets. it would be one of the most memorable times for you. have a wonderful trip .

Tony, sorry, I've visited Vouliagmeni but never stayed there so can't comment on bus or taxi service or costs to Athens. I can tell you that if the price is not a problem, the Astir Palace hotel in Vouliagmeni is gorgeous, right on the beach. In Athens, I stayed at the Grand Bretagne and I recommend it highly although it's been years since I stayed there.
tony, the hotel in athens is located between syntagma & omonia sq which is a good location. i have always stayed at the aphrodite just mins from plaka & a wonderful view of the acropolis, especially at night when it is lit. it's a "c" hotel, rooms are not fancy but has a good breakfast included in price. last 2 yrs double room was 19,000 drachs. if you are able to book at your choice their number is 3234357 fax 3225244 ask for the acropolis view. also..be sure to see the changing of the guards at the parliment bldg. they have a change at 6 pm.
tony, hope this isn't a repeat, 1st message didn't seem to set...the hotel in athens is between syntagma & omonia sq. a good location..if you are free to book your own hotel, you might consider the aphrodite (i hv always stayed here) just mins. wlk to plaka & 2 blks from syntagma. the last 2 yrs the price has been 19,000 drachs for double. it's a "c" hotel the other is a"b", rooms are not fancy but works, has a great view of the acropolis especially at night when lit & includes a good breakfast. their number is 323437 & fax 3225244.....ask for acropolis view....also plan to see the changing of the guards at the parliment bldg...there is a change at 6pm don't know the other times. ..if you drink wine, ask for & try the "house wine" it's good & not as costly as the bottles. taziki (a cucumber dip for bread) is wonderful & is a "starter" i probably think so because it was the 1st thing i tried on my first trip...what islands are you visiting?...i'm passing going this year & envy you your trip.

Beejay:
Thanks once again for the very helpful information. We'll toast you with a glass of house wine and a sadziki appetizer when we arrive in Greece!
To answer your question, since this is our first trip we're concentrating on the major islands --- Rhodes, Crete, and Santorini.( We are avoiding Mykonos --- too expensive, decadent?).
We're also planning a day trip out of Athens by ferry to one of the smaller and hopefully less "touristy" islands probably, Aegina, Angistri or Poros.
Tony
