The Metro takes 45 minutes and costs 6 euro for one or 10 euro for 2 people. The bus takes 60 minutes or longer and costs 3.2 euro each. A taxi between 6am and 11pm will cost you a minimum of 35 euro.
The metro is fastest and easy although is was closed last summer for work. The bus is also easy, just not as comfortable or as fast. Either way is much cheaper than a taxi. Enjoy!
Yes, Metro is fast, easy and convenient and recently reopened. Remember to validate your ticket at the self-serve machines - big penalty if they check and you haven't done so. Suggest sitting near door if you've got luggage. Train fills up fast as you head toward center of Athens and getting off with luggage if you're not near a door can be real hassle.
The decision between bus & metro could depend on you city destination. If it's Syntagma Square, or close, either would do, if it's Monastiraki the metro would be better, any other areas just post again & ask for the best route/combination of travel.
Validating tickets, a good reminder from dfr4848, but take note that the same applies to a bus ticket, they need to be validated in the orange box on the bus.
