Can you suggest a comfortable four- (or five-)star hotel that would be easy to reach by taxi? I've heard that many streets in the Plaka and around Syntagma are strictly for pedestrians. What about the Athens Plaza, the Electra Palace and the Divani Caravel?

As far as I could tell the pedestrian streets in the Plaka were the ones with little shops or small restaurants only. Someone else may correct me but taxis can likely access all the hotels. It would be dfficult for them to get business otherwise.
I think the Elektra Palace would be a great choice. I love the roof pool and bar there. It's a wonderful place to enjoy a cocktail while you watch the lights go on the Acropolis.
the grand bretagne and george something are right on syntagma. didnt stay at them, but stopped for coffee and dinner at G.B several times during my week.
lovely.
