Thanks for the tip! Moved it to the top of our queue.
We're heading over Sept. 16 (fourth visit), so we've been watching some Italy movies: La Dolce Vita, Tea With Mussolini, Enchanted April, Scorcese's My Voyage to Italy. Just got Only You and Where Angels Fear to Tread, and have Talented Mr. RIpley and The Tourist up next (after Purple Noon!). Not all necessarily great movies, but it's all about the setting. I know Stealing Beauty really captures the look of Tuscany, and then there are so many classics, like Roman Holiday. Unfortunately, Comfort of Strangers doesn't seem to be available on Netflix. Oh well. Oh, and we might have to rewatch L'Avventura.
I could go on, but I wonder what other movies people have watched that capture the look and feel of Italy?

You'll find a nice piece by Anthony Minghella, explaining his location choices for TTMrR - many of which duplicated those of the French original - here...

Not cinema, but we've recently enjoyed the DVDs from the BBC's series of 3 Aurelio Zen adaptations, all relocated to Rome and shot beautifully - and PBS has just finished showing them...
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/zen/index.html
Back further south, a good chunk of this was shot on our neighbouring island, the lovely little Procida...

But my favourite is still one from days long gone.. "Avanti"

Each summer there's a movie-trail as part of the Ischia Film Festival, highlighting parts of the island used as locations...

The continuing cross-connections between the various different actors, producers and writers who came here are quite remarkable!

"Letters to Juliet"...FANTASTIC Tuscany settings!!! And the movie is cute too.
Didan and Brit Peter, my Netflix queue was getting short. Thanks to your tips, will add to it!!! Avanti, Stealing Beauty, etc. Mille grazie!!
Alain Delon in "Purple Noon" is brilliant ...and a hunk to look at.

I'm sure there are others, and newer ones too, but this may still be of interest...

Ira, so glad you mentioned SUMMERTIME with Katherine Hepburn and Rossani Brassi from 1955. Before many Fodorites were born, I dare say. The film was done by David Lean whose cinematography was fabulous. His other spectaculars include LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, RYAN’S DAUGHTER, and DOCTOR ZHIVAGO.
The film raised a few hackles back then. What I remember most was the scene when the (mature) lovers spend their first night together. They disappear behind a balcony door leaving only the Hepburn’ s red high heel slipper behind. The next morning, the lovers are seen dashing ecstatically across St. Mark’s square as the sun rises. Ah, we just have to use our imaginations. Great film!

Speaking of raising hackles r/t "Summertime"
you should see the full frontal and back-al nudity (including Jack Lemmon's buns) in "Avanti!" !
Having been born, as Latedaytrav mentions, pre=1955, I was very delightfully surprised!!

Loved "Avanti"! Adorable movie, though if we're talking nudity some readers might be more enticed by Juliet Mills. Jack Lemmon was fab — he's the actor Tom Hanks wants to be when he grows up. And Clive Revill steals the show; well, after Ischia.
Just watched "Mid-August Lunch." Almost zero scenic shots but a terrific showcase of charming personalities. "Purple Noon" arrives today, "Talented Mr.Ripley" tomorrow.

Very oddly, when telling friends and acquaintances we were moving here, only "Avanti" would trigger any recollection of the island's existence.... but then we were mostly an impressionable 16 or 17 when it came out!
You'll need to look in Sorrento for where they filmed the hotel scenes - here of course we've proper beaches and few bathing platforms!
Last night we made the sad mistake of watching 'Eat Pray Love' on the TV - lest I'm on dangerous ground, I'll say only that we should have turned off the sound, and just enjoyed the scenery....
Peter
PS - If I've not posted it recently, for a more or less complete Ischian filmography - of international and then Italian productions - try...

Well, Italy filmfest is well underway. Thanks, CaliNurse, for the tip on Purple Noon. Beautiful movie -- man, that tense scene on the boat was great cinematgraphy. And "Mongibello" (which I believe was actually Procida?) looked lie classic coastal southern Italy. Excellent movie. Watched Where Angels Fear to Tread and are halfway through Talented Mr. Ripley. In the queue: Fiorile, Shadows in the Sun and The Tourist. Also want to get It Started in Naples, if only to compare Sophia Loren's rendition of "Tu Vuo' Fa l'Americano" to Jude Law's!

Didan, did Jude Law sing that in "...Ripley"?
Great fun watching Sophia Loren...and an older Clark Gable as an American businessman who is (of course) taken with La Loren's and Italy's charms.
Thanks again all for tips...Netflix queue is lengthening!

Yes, CaliNurse, it was a very fun scene with Jude Law singing along; Matt Damon also joins in. Quite the snappy version. You can find it on iTunes by searching for the title of the film or the song. (You even hear the main singer calling "Dickie" up to the stage.)
