Are we crazy thinking about flying into Amsterdam on Queen's Day?

We'll be on our way to Tuscany in early May and we're thinking about stopping in Amsterdam for a few days first. The best option to fit with our travel plans gets us to Amsterdam on Queen's Day, 30 April. I know it's a national holiday and most of the city shuts down. I assume the tourist sites will be closed? Will the city be a madhouse or will walking around getting our bearings and stretching our legs after a long flight be an option? I'm not quite sure what to expect.
