I'm traveling throughout Europe in June and was hoping to make minimal advance reservations. I was planning to bring an ipad to research hotels along the way. Does anyone know if there are very many free wi-fi hot spots in Europe the way there are in the U.S. (Starbucks, etc.)?

Paris trip report

You can get free wifi at any tourism office in France as well as most cafes. Some villages have village wide WIFI so you can connect anywhere in the village. You'll have no trouble at all finding free WIFI or inexpensive WIFI.
Any McDonald's that you walk into has free wifi or at least in France. I also recall getting free wifi while walking the Champs Élysées.
In Paris, there is a free wifi you can connect to. Details on http://www.aussieinfrance.com/2011/11/3-iphone-apps-for-paris-and-wifi. The cafés in the provinces don't necessarily advertise their free wifi. Just check if there's a connection.
Aussie - just now seeing your site, great info! Merci pour tout!
There is a free WIFI finder app available from
http://www. jiwire.com You can also use their site to search online for wifi hotspots.
Starbucks also has free wifi. I learned this when travelling with a colleague with a severe addiction to large cups of coffee
