Are there Internet Cafes in Italy where I can transfer my digital snaps to a CD?

One more question on Italy .. I will be travelling through Italy - Florence, Pisa, Como and Venice - wit a digi cam in hand and I was not sure how much memory sticks to carry? I was wondering whether there would be enough Internet cafes around where I can download my snaps from the camera and write it on to a CD? And how much do these cafe charge nowadays? Alternative is to obviously stock up on memory cards .. I already have 288 MB of camera memory ... But knowing the way we click snaps I dont think this would be enough!

Thanks
T

On every corner! Well, not quite but almost. I have a mini hard drive that I download to (Digital Wallet) but last summer in Florence it broke and I was happy to find places to burn CDs everywhere for about 8€. Many are photo shops, not internet cafes. Just bring in your memory card and they burn it while you wait, or come back in an hour. The 8€ is per memory card whether its 128mb or 512mb - as long as it fits on a CD. So it's cheaper to have 512mb size cards. There were plenty in Venice too but I wasn't looking for them in Pisa and Como but I'll bet they are there. Looks like you are going to the same places I did. Have a great trip.

Hi

I am faced with the same issue when in Spain. What I was gonna try was a thumb drive. These hold about 256MB (but you can get some that hold 1GB), plug into the USB port and cost about US$20 - much cheaper than memory sticks. Of course the unknown factor is whether the internet cafe will allow you to upload the photos onto these. There may be Fodorites who can advise whether this is feasible.

Just a suggestion.

Hi tripp,

The various internet points I was in in Italy did not permit you to insert your own media into their computers.

>I was not sure how much memory sticks to carry?<

How many MPx per shot do you use?

Don't fuss with transferring pics while you're sightseeing. Instead,

(1) Buy more memory. 256 MB cards are $20 or so in the USA (thrice that Over There).

(2) Every few nights, playback and review your pics. You will delete half of them, at least. It's enjoyable, and your photography will improve too.

(3) If you're still running short, adjust the Compression or File Size buttons on your camera to conserve memory.

I think it's a great idea to have them loaded onto CDs at a photo shop. That way you have a good back up - no bad surprises when you get home and for some strange reason have no photos on the memory card - unlikely to happen, but what if???

I've popped into camera shops, given them my memory sticks and they'll put it on a CD for me within an hour.

1) Buy more memory. It's a) cheaper than getting pictures burned to disk, and b) doesn't waste your time i) finding a shop, and ii) waiting for the process.

2) Take your laptop and use that to capture your priceless images.

3) If you INSIST on transferrring your photos to CD, make sure the CDs are readable before you flush the memory!

Hi trippster --

I've been wondering about this myself and think it's a great idea. I am insane about the number of photos I take, so a lot of the replies here may not be feasible if you are the same way. Additional memory cards can cost $30+, so E8 sounds like a deal to me. Not to mention, I already take several gigs of memory cards with me... and they still get filled up.

The other option I'm considering (if I decide I can afford it) is to purchase the iPod photo with optional camera connector (basically a card reader). If you've been wanting a pod, you might check into this idea. It's basically a digital wallet, but with the capability of playing music, as well.

Here's a link to the camera connector:

Good luck! -- Heather.

eCost has a Viking 512mb CompactFlash card for $25 (free shipping) today. It will hold

650 - 3mp images
818 - 2mp
1100 - 1mp
3994 - .3mp

When you have shelled out €8 to transfer a smaller memory to CD a couple of times, you could have paid for a memory that will hold them all. Your call.

A CD holds ~700MB of data. An extra memory card is always good, but if you're going on a very long trip, then you will still need to have the files transferred to a CD.

8 Euros seem kind of expensive, but maybe that's how much it cost. Maybe you can find cheaper, I don't know. I have a CD burned in Macau (next to Hong Kong) once, and it costs me US$2.5.

We bought a 1 gigabite memory card for $80 at Circuit City. It will allow me to take at least 1700 pics at 1600x1200. I have a 4.0 mega pixel camera.

Best Buy has them on sale right now for $82. I love taking pictures and figured that the one time expense of $80 was worth it instead of carrying multiple cards.

Get the CDs made. Just make sure a computer can read them before you erase your memory stick.

Make two CDs if you're in doubt.

Cheez.

robespierre.....you are a "man" who doesn't believe the murphy law theory..
Packing light to europe does not include a laptop...

.I think there is a camera place with plenty of experience at the vatican museum

hLocke1 wow I cant believe you use several gigs....love it.

Murphy's Law (which has been widely misquoted) states: If anything CAN happen, it WILL. Nothing more. I don't know exactly what this has to do with Europe, packing, laptops, or photo CDs.

Having a shop transfer my pictures to CD is my LAST choice (see above). Carrying a laptop to Europe makes sense if you're driving, because you can navigate by GPS without renting a unit. Or if you need a computer for business or writing. I can't think of any other reason I'd take one.

euroenvy - If you're doing videos and 5MP pics, you need lots of storage space. The best way is to invest in a hard-drive based storage device. I don't have specific recommendations, but there are 20GB or larger devices for <$300.

Or if you've always wanted an iPod, get one, and buy an adapter to download photo files onto it.

Or, you can buy a microdrive for your Pocket PC.

Search eBay for hitachi 4gb. Next year, Hitachi will be selling a 20gb version.
