Are there Fireworks in Paris on New Years?
Several people have told me that there isn't a show by the Eiffel Tower annually on New Years, and the millenium celebration was a one-time deal. Now, other people are telling me that there is a show each new years... Can I get a show of hands? I am confused!

Thanks,

Daniel

Here's a hand that was very disappointed in Paris last New Year's Eve when there was nothing much going on. We did discover the next day that some partying had happened near the Eiffel Tower, but no fireworks. I went there thinking it was an annual event.

Incidentally, all restaurants had very high prices for NY Eve. A meal that might cost 30 euros ordinarily will be at least 100 euros that night.

I haven't been there on that date, but from what I have read -- there often is, but not always. Unfortunately, I don't think the local govt even announces that far ahead of time if there will be or not, which is why some were surprised when there weren't any the last year or two (I don't think there have been any since 12/31/99, but I could be wrong). The millennium was not a one-time deal, but I have read that they don't plan to do fireworks on NY eve in Paris annually anymore, so I wouldn't count on it. I don't know why -- could be budget. They do have them in some other French cities, though.

Sorry, we do not have fireworks on December 31, but on July 14 (Bastille Day). Additionaly, there are fireworks in Paris on the Fete de la Seine (Generally September 10).

In both cases, the firing is from the Ile de la Cite, and not from the Eiffel Tower.

New Year Eve is not a special occasion in Paris at all, since people go to private parties or to office parties, so the streets are quite empty, apart the occasional gang and poor tourists.

Note to Crusty: The metro does not close at 00:30, this is the hour at which the last metro begins its journey at each starting point, so the metro closes at 1:30 really. In any case, there are excellent night buses services, much nicer than a nightly trip in the underground, called Noctambus and much cheaper than cabs.

Yikes! The streets were virtually teeming with people on New Year's eve. They were still teeming at 6 am the next morning when the shuttle picked us up for the trip to the airport!

But no fireworks other than some stray rockets that shot off the bridge by the Ile de la cite. And restaurants were tres cher and it was COLD.
