Are there any areas in Budapest that are unsafe or seedy that we should avoid?

Does anyone know about the area around
Szabadsag hid? Is this a good area? There is an apartment there on the river but don't know if that is a good location. Thanks for everyone's help.

I didn't see any seedy areas while we were there in June but some areas are nicer than others. I have no idea where this is, can you post what metro stop it is near?

It's also known as Liberty Bridge . It is where the street Vamhaz krt meets Belgraid rampart. I believe the metro is M3 station Mercure Korona.
Thanks so much for your help

The area isn't really in the center of the tourist area. It's near some things but not in the center. The area is safe but the tourist areas are more north of there. Public transportation can get you to those areas in 20 mins...but there are many apts available in the more touristy areas. I stayed at one northwest of the your area and it was fine but it was on the outskirts of all of the touristy areas and it really depends what you want to get out of your vacation. I know many have posted apts in Budapest on this forum.... Good luck and have fun. I truly enjoyed my time in Budapest!

Thanks so much for your help. I really do want to stay closer to the tourist area. My husband and I like to sit out and watch the city or people in the evening. That is why I would like a room with a view. Don't care weather it is an apt or hotel. Would like to stay in budget around $100 a night. Since that doesn't seem possible is there any place with view of a square that people hang out in the evening like the Town Square in Prague? Thanks again

It's me again!

I did a search here using the words budapest apartment and just clicking on a few of the threads got recommendations from several people who have rented apartments and posted links. I did come across one link - it might have been vrbo - which was an apartment with a balcony overlooking a square just off Vaci Utca, near the market hall I think but it only had a double bed and as I don't want to share with my daughter I didn't note it! Anyway I only clicked on a dozen or so threads and just a few links so it wasn't difficult to find.

I know someone else had asked about inexpensive hotel/apts in Budapest. I bookmarked the following:
http://www.apartmentsopera.com/index...?tt=1134685722

Also I stayed at this apartment in Pest. The area is very urban, but the metro was a 5 min walk and the apt was great.

http://www.vrbo.com/67871

The girl that owns that lives in Toronto but her parents help her with it and live next door. They are wonderful.

There are wonderful squares all over in Pest to hand out and people watch (especially near the Octogan metro stop) on Liszt ter ( about 3 blocks walk east) and along the Danube and on Castle Hill. We would stop at least once a day and people watch.

I hope this is helpful.

Gregeva1 and Julia T thanks so much for all of your help. Gregeva1, most of the apartments appear to be in district VI. I was trying to stay in V because I thought this was more centrally located. Am I wrong? I'm not really into theater or opera and I thought that was what was in district VI. Am I missing something?
Thanks again

I think the reason that most of the apt rentals are outside of district v is probably the property price. Since it's closest to all the hotels and the parliament that property was really expensive while district vi has come a long way and changed a lot. I think price wise staying outside of v is more cost effective. Everything is super close in Budapest so an extra few minutes by metro ( they come and go constantly and are quite safe) should be OK for you. Budapest has changed so much since I was there 10 years ago. it was a pleasant surprise. It was cleaner and seemed more tourist friendly, maybe going into the EU did this...but you should be fine in these areas...if you want more specific info, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

We just returned from Budapest on Monday and we stayed at the Marriot in Pest with the best view in the city ...so great of the river, the palace all lit up at night, the people walking below...very nice and only $140.00 a night.

Why don't you look at the Marriott Millenium Executive Apartments.

Less expensive than Marriott. Location almost the same (less view). Full breakfast included. We had a very large two room suite plus as kitchen, etc.

A block or two from the Marriott. They even arranged (at my expense) for a taxi with my name on it to meet us at the train station since we arrived at 11:30PM.

Does anyone know the way to get the best rate at the Marriott Mellenium? I know online I can get it through Orbitz at $95 for a studio but I hate to book with them so early and not be able to cancel. Has anyone booked through the hotel directly? Is it worth the long distance call?
Thanks again
