Are taxis easily obtained at the train station in Florence?

8 of us will be arriving in Florence by train. Will it be easy to get a couple of taxis?. We have an appointment shortly after we arrive so we're on a tight time schedule.

Usually there are no problems, maybe a few minutes in a queue. When there are trade fairs or heavy rains taxis get scarce, but usually the station is always serviced.

How "shortly" is "shortly"? If you are on a tight time schedule and all of you MUST be somewhere or else there will be unhappy consequences, arrange for a car service to pick up your group. What asps says is true, but the combination of a delayed train + the types of events that asps mentions does present risks.

The last time I was in Florence, mid-week, about 1 PM, there was no line for taxis, and I had an abundance to choose from. I picked the most handsome driver, of course. The guys in front of him were not thrilled, but they understood. My driver chatted all the way up the hill to Bellosguardo, and he insisted on speaking in English. He said he needed the practice and loved talking to Americans. How cute. I'll never forget him.

We were visiting my niece in Florence for her semester abroad and it was about midnight and she needed a cab. She told me that we had to go to a taxi stand but I flagged down the next passing cab.

The last time I needed a taxi at the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence, three of the drivers swooned at my feet and offered to take me to the Grand Hotel Villa Medici free of charge.

How much time do you have between the scheduled train arrival and the appointment? Will all 8 of you have luggage? Are you dragging it to the appointment with you?

What happens if the train is 15 or 20 minutes late?

I had a female taxi driver rip me off in Athens. But I am pretty sure she thought I was cute as she smiled at me the entire trip.

Was she cute though?

I once had a female taxi driver try to rip me off in Rome, but she was ugly and I wasn't born yesterday.

Florence is quite small, it might be easy to walk to your hotel depending on where it is. Double check that it's Santa Maria Novella your train will stop at, there are several train stations in Florence.
