In October, I'll be in Umbria for five nights (after a visit to Rome) with a rental car.

We were planning to get a reservation in a centrally located town such as Bevagna for the first night and then take it from there. Since some of the area is quite rural, I didn't know whether it is necessary to have hotel reservations for every night or whether it is possible to find places in towns like Bevagna, Montefalco, Norcia, Orvieto.

On our last vacation, we enjoyed having the flexibiltiy to stay an extra night at places we really liked. But, I don't want to have to sleep in the car!

unless you hit some local festival, it is highly unlikely that you will not find somewhere to stay in Umbria in October.

will you be taking an accommodation guide like Michelin with you? very useful for getting the feel of a place [how many hotels, what sort of prices] as well as the maps.

and if you were really worried, you could always ring ahead.

Early October or late October? IMO, there's a difference.

I'd probably book in advance, but at a minimum I'd call ahead. Wandering around hill towns looking for lodging and parking would drive me nuts, and I'm too picky about quality and cost to just take whatever I find first.

IMO, you could spend the entire five nights in Bevagna. It's in a central location for exploring Umbria. Moving from Bevagna to Montefalco would be a waste of time as they're only a few miles apart. I would visit Orvieto on the way from Rome.

I am with Jean---why not use Bevagna as your base the entire time---or at least book there with the option to extend.
