For a European apt, it's large and that area is pretty well located as I recall. It's NOT dead central for Plaza Mayor or the museums or Gran Via, but it's a short Metro ride to each.

We have never been to Madrid - we were going to stay at a Marriott Property on points but I am thinking of renting an apartment for 4 nights instead (3 people - couple with one 17 year old)...

Your second option is larger and closer to the main shopping, museum and tourist areas. For Central Madrid, it's bloody huge. A square meter = 10.5625 square feet and that second option is 1742+ sq/ft.

OMG, those are all absolutely beautiful. Even a piano in one! You really found some nice places at reasonable prices. I am marking for the future.

You have found one of the most upscale neighborhoods, we enjoyed strollong through and window shopping. It is a couple of short metro stops away, but if this is the price you desire to pay it appears you are getting quite a bit for your money.

the last one is very central, close to attractions.
We rented from SS twice and had good experience.

The three are gorgeous. My preference would be the third one, in the Barrio de las Letras, as that's my preferred location when I go to Madrid. Salamanca is a lovely residential/ commercial area but IMO less central.

Did you notice that the description of the 2nd apartment is about Sevilla? The map does show the apt being in Madrid.

p.s. The first one is in an upscale area we love, but it may not be as central
as a first time visitor would wish.

Another vote for the third apt, in excellent Barrio de las Letras. I always stay in this area when in Madrid: http://www.barrioletras.com/

You are close to the best flamenco restaurant in Spain in recent years, Casa Patas. Only top artists and great atmosphere: http://www.casapatas.com/

Also close to Café Central, the best jazz venue in town. Live concerts every night at 10pm, changing artists every week. Good food also. Have had several fabulous nights here: http://www.cafecentralmadrid.com/

Almost next door to traditional Madrid restaurant Casa Alberto from 1827: http://www.casaalberto.es/
Still very popular with the madrileños: http://11870.com/pro/casa-alberto

And the apartment is three minutes walking away from vibrant Plaza Santa Ana: http://www.gomadrid.com/sights/plaza-santa-ana.html

And few minutes walking to the fantastic Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums.

I usually try to stay in a studio on C/Cervantes-aminute away from your apartment! Make sure to visit the house of Lope de Vega.Right next door to it, is a place that makes the best /freshest potato chips ever! At the corner of Cervantes and C/Leon is a great plaque dedicated to Cervantes but I can never get a photo because there's a silly tree blocking it!
Love the neighborhood, lots of little shops and places to eat!

And you are very close to Cervecería Alemana, one of Hemingways favourite places in Madrid. International and German beer, but a very Spanish place. Of course popular with tourists, but the place is genuine and full of locals as well:

Kimhe, thanks for pointing out Cervercería Alemana was one of Hemingway's haunts. I always go there at least once when in Madrid but wasnt aware of that historical tidbit. Its amazing he had time to write, it seems he was a fixture at bar's and cafes galore all over the world, including in my native Cuba.
