Apartment in Croatia

Does anyone have recommendations for renting a small apartment for two people for a two- to three-week visit to Croatia in June? Would Split be a reasonable base from which to plan day-trips along the Dalmatian Coast using public transport (bus or boat), or would it be better to move from Dubrovnik to Split to Rovinj, spending a few days in each? Any suggestions about other places we should not miss? I remember seeing some beautiful fjords from the bus east of Dubrovnik in 1978. Does anyone have information about that area?

I think the distances are too great to see all these places as day trips, you would need to move on, spending a few days in each. We stayed in the centre of Dubrovnik and loved it:

This is where we stayed in Rovinj, it's very central and we had wonderful seaviews :

If you look on Google Maps or Via Michelin you can work out the distances between these places which would help with your planning. I believe the bus between Dubrovnik and Split is something like 5 or 6 hours.

I agree with Kay - day trips from a single destination wouldn't work if you want to see all three areas.

The gorgeous Bay of Kotor is southeast of Dubrovnik in Montenegro.

For those three places, you could certainly spend a week in each, but you could also break it up even more with some stays on islands in between. I also highly recommend a stop at Plitvice National Park, which you could visit between Split and Rovnij.

For 3 weeks in June I suggest traveling up the coast from Dubrovnik to Rovinj with stops in Korcula, Hvar, and Split. You could also spend a couple of days at the Plitvice Lakes park. From Dubrovnik you can make day trips to Montenegro and Mostar. For accommodation the above mentioned Amoret apartments in Dubrovnik are really nice and are in a great location in the Old Town. I would also check out www.dubrovnikapartmentsource.com for some more options.

You might be interested in my trip report from last July. I also give links to the three places we stayed (Dubrovnik, Korcula, and Split - in "apartments". We also took day trips to Mostar and Montenegro as suggested above.

My six-peneth on this:
- Budva in Montenegro (part of the old Yugoslavia) is a great place to start if you're travelling North. A gorgeous old walled town that is easy to get to from Dubrovnik airport. Kotor (on the Bay of Kotor) is another gem, however only a days sightseeing here - also quite easy to see from Budva or Dubrovnik - or stop off on the way from Budva to Dubrovnik.
- Dubrovnik: like many cities, choice of location is critical to a stay in Dubrovnik. Either stay close in: Old town, close to Ploce Gate in the SE of the old town or close to Pile Gate on the NW corner of the old town. If you're an "Island an boat type" and enjoy quieter evenings, the other great places to stay are on the beautiful Elaphite Islands of Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan.
One of the Fjords you spotted was the inlet just north of Dubrovnik where the river comes out of the mountains only about 10 miles inland.
- Korcula always gets my bet as the next stop North, although Hvar gets my second vote - you could also do both as a ferry links the two (just check schedules..)
- Never really taken by Split itself, although it has some good flights. Clearly the islands around it and the National park are great reasons to stay/fly through there.
Hope this helps.
Chris

What month would be better for hotter weather, June or September?? Trying to decide between Croatia or Turkey for 1 month.
What would you budget for hotels in Croatia per night for a moderate room or apartment.

Thanks!!
