Aosta, Gran Paradiso

We are heading to South of france from Switzerland via the St. Bernard pass through Italy. We are planning on stopping around Aosta or farther up in mountains such as Lillaz or Cogne. Anyone have any must-see's around the area? Will probably spend one night

We will be there for 3 nights this Oct. Please report back on your findings. Where are you staying?

The Val di Cogne was not THAT attractive IMO, especially when compared to the Swiss Alps. I assume you'd be headed for France over the Petit St Bernard, so I'd suggest that you visit and/or stay at the base of Mont Blanc along the Val Ferrat or Val Veny. The gigantic Mont looms.

For jabez, further to the east is the Val Tournenche, dominated by the picturesque sight of the Matterhorn (Mt Cervino) at the head of the valley. Take the cable car to reach Chamois, high above the valley. In the next valley over - Val d'Ayas - the town of Ayas is quite nice. Use the shortcut between valleys over the Colle di Joux.

We spent a couple of hours exploring the roman ruins in Aosta. Other than that there didn;t seem to be a whole lot to do. We asked at the hotel and were reco'd to attend the demolition derby that evening as a typical activity.

Visper - I don't know Val di Cogne ... but Tuck's given you some great tips.

Personally for an overnight I'd head for the Courmayeur area. You could even take a cable car ride up Mont Blanc ...

Thanks for the hints. I'm now a bit unsure of our idea to spend three nights there.
We thought that this would be an unique area with great scenery.
For some reason I get the idea that it's somewhat similar to Glacier National park in Montana.
I think I'll start a new thread and ask some specific questions. Only have 3 weeks for the trip, don't want to "waste" 3 nights of it.
