My sister and I will be in Spain in early January and wanted to drive through La Rioja on our way from Barcelona to Bilbao, but I'm starting to see that a lot is closed (hotels, restaurants). Is anything open around the 9th & 10th of January? Or should we pick a different route?
Anything in La Rioja open in January?

No, stick with your selected route even though it is a roundabout way to reach Bilbao. It's worth the tip. There are a number of excellent places for you to stay including hotels and CRs in Haro, Logroño, Abalos & San Vicente de La Sonsierra in La Rioja Alta, as well as hotels in Laguardia & Samaniego in La Rioja Alavesa.
For Haro you can contact the Hotel Los Agustinos*** which is open all year (http://www.charming-spain-hotels.com/en/27/LA-RIOJA/La-Rioja/Hotel-Los-Agustinos).
For Logroño you can check out the Hotel Trip Los Bracos****, where we stayed this past September.
For Abalos you'll want to check out the Villa de Abalos***(http://www.hotelvilladeabalos.com/) which would be an excellent choice.
For San Vicente de La Sonsierra you can contact Casa Toni, which is also one of the top rated restaurants in La Rioja Alta.
For someplace to stay in La Rioja Alavesa, you can try the Posada Mayor de Migueloa, the Palacio Samaniego, or the Villa de Laguardia.
There are also two Paradors in La Rioja, Calahorra and Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which are open all year and dozens of Casas Rural.
If you need any further help, you can contact Totally Spain or Basque Country Travels. They should be able to provide some assistance if you can't find anything on your own.
Thank you, Robert! I just sent an email to Totally Spain. Some of the places you mentioned look brilliant, but are closed on Sunday & Monday (the days we're there), so hopefully they'll have some ideas. I'm certainly more than happy to pay a travel agent at this point. Thanks again!
