Anyone trying to get out of the French Alps?

Yes.. I read a bunch of Brits went racing off to ski.. and surprise.. there was lots of snow in the Alps on the roads , in winter.. and it seemed many simply were unprepared and should not have been on the roads..
Saw complaints about the shelters not being luxurious enough.. here in Canada you are told to stay in your bloody car and given a blanket.. ok.. that's not true , because here in Canada anyone driving to or from a ski resort in the mountains, in winter, would be aware that the roads may be snow covered.. that they should have extra clothes and food and drink with them.. and GOOD snow tires, plus CHAINS.. and many would not bother in those rinky cars.. four wheel drives are better when driving in snow.. and we sort of get there might be snow in the mountains in the winter.. its all so "duh"..
Sounds like a lot of poorly prepared holiday makers did not put their thinking caps on..

If your Hometown Bugle can't quite manage to pick up the story, Dukey, do you really find it challenging to use the BBC or Guardian news sites (on the front page of each), or even news.google.com ?

Well any people who set off into 20" of snow without ay preparations are simply not operating with a full deck.
If there is a major snow storm then travel simply stops unless roads are clear - one just stays where it it.
This happens some place every winter in the US - with passengers often stranded for 2 or 3 days days waiting for snow to clear and flights to resume. As for heading out on the roads in that kind of weather - close to madness unless you are driving a snow plow.
Don;t these people get that you just stay where you are until weather clears? And driving in this weather in cars that are not properly equipped - and drivers not used to driving in snow which is a ver different skill set - well it's just ridiculous.
Who could not expect a lot of snow in the Alps in winter?
And why would US media pick this up - it's not really news - except for the ridiculous actions of those ignoring the weather. When storms are bad here all roads are closed except for emergency vehicles.

You have to remember that given that it is Christmas the journos have all been going mad at home and have only the usual to talk about, Aunt Jessie's knee, house prices, booze, winter travel and ski-holidays. This year we have North Korea (but that is getting traditional now). One panic has been that there is little snow in the Alps and of course it all arrived two days ago.
Hence the news, it looks like a lot of people do not know the law of having to have chains in the areas descrbed and I suspect that many of the travellers will be French as most Brits will come by train/fly and then coach.
Looks like a lot of fun mainly.

Some quite smug comments here from North America!
There has been hardly any snow in Europe until the snowfall and, yes, people have been caught out - but not just Brits as suggested by one commentator!
Have some sympathy - we are ALL susceptible to being caught out occasionally!

It seems the news nowadays includes dramatic weather reports. CBC has reported snow in various parts of Canada as a headline. Laughable to most people I'm sure. The first snowstorm on the prairies had CBC reporters standing in what looked like a few inches of snow. All news stations have changed the news forever as the need for more and more "news".

Actually, in Paris yesterday there was a minor piece of real news concerning the weather -- it froze for the first time in 379 days, which was the longest non-freezing period in recorded history.
