Anyone taken the night train from Luxembourg to Munich?
After our 7 day river cruise ends in Luxembourg, we are heading to Munich and thought it would be nice to take the overnight train. We have the choice of a 15 minute connection in Metz, France or, since we will have already done a city tour of Luxembourg, I thought we might take an earlier train to Metz, walk around, find a nice place for dinner and then board the 11pm night train to Munich. Has anyone ever taken the City Night Train? It has 6 berth couchettes (we are 2 couples going).
Also, any suggestions for touring Metz and dinner?
Thanks,
Roz

The City Night Line sleeper trains are excellent, and inexpensive too - see photos at www.seat61.com/citynightline.htm
I'd pay a bit more to go 4-berth couchettes, then you'd have privacy and a lot more space per passenger. Book it at www.bahn.de from 59 euros in 6-berth or 69 euros per person in 4-berth. Or indeed 99 euros per person in a 2-bed sleeper.
Don't risk a 15 minute connection if you're catching a sleeper train you cannot afford to miss, definitely take an earlier train from Luxembourg. Yes, dinner in Metz then an 11pm sleeper would work very well. Had a nice curry myself last week before walking into Euston station next door for the 23:50 sleeper to Edinburgh, lovely.

Metz is definitely worth an afternoon/evening or a day. The Pompidou art museum in Paris has opened a flashy branch adjacent to the train station. Exhibits draw on the Pompidou's collection of modern and contemporary art: http://www.centrepompidou-metz.fr/en/welcome
The centre of the city includes several plazas, parks, museums and a handsome cathedral. Tourist info: http://tourisme.metz.fr/en/index.php
Being Lorraine, the menus tend to be hearty with lots of interesting beer to sample. The centre is about a kilometre from the train station, a pleasant stroll but not with baggage. I don't remember seeing lockers or a left-luggage service. You could try e-mailing a question to SNCF or perhaps Seat 61 knows.
The station itself is an architectural landmark: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gare_de_Metz-Ville

Checking a few dummy dates for the sleeper on bahn.de, I noticed a warning in the given itinerary saying that due to line works the sleeper "can" bypass Metz on some dates. Travelers are adviced to contact CNL before they book.
You may want to check your planned travel date to see if a similar warning triangle appears for the sleeper connection that day.

great sites for lots of info on overnight trains like CNL - first Man in Seat 61's commercial site www.seat61.com and also www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com. And score some nifty discounts in advance by booking at www.bahn.de - German Railways site but do so far in advance as the deep discount tickets are strictly limited in numbers and can sell out quickly.
