Hi there - loving being in this forum!
Does anyone know the cost of a cheap/slow train Venice to Florence as well as Florence to Rome as well as Rome to Salerno? The trenitalia website only seems to list the high speed train fares and we're on a budget.

Hi Zed - You can still find the fares for the slow R and IR (- Regional/ Inter-regional) trains on Trenitalia website. But you will normally have to break up your planned journeys - changing train enroute.
e.g. Venice-Bologna then Bologna-Florence;
Rome-Naples then Naples-Salerno
Venice-Bologna
€ 8.90
Bologna-Florence
€6.00 approx
Florence-Rome
€ 16.00
Rome-Naples
€ 10.50
Naples-Salerno
€ 5.00 approx

You have no doubt already found this one, from Florence to Rome. On the other routes you've named, the ICPlus have the cheapest rates, but, as you have found, there do not seem to be any Regionale. You could try for the Amica fare on those 2 routes.

Trenitalia does list the cheap trains, but there are only a few a day. There's an IC Plus for 21.50 Euro, but it goes from Mestre to Firenze Rifredi, not from Venezia Santa Lucia to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. There's an IC from Venezia SL to Firenze Rifredi for 23.50 Euro.
Steve - Where did you find that 6€ fare for Bologna/Florence? I don't see that fare on Trenitalia.
The problem with some of the slow trains/fares listed above is you might have to take it early in the morning for part of your journey (say Venice/Bologna) and then there might not be one for the Bologna/Florence leg until late afternoon. Do you really want to spend your vacation days in train stations? I would book the ICPlus Zerlina listed for Venice/Florence instead of breaking up the trip and hanging out in Bologna train station to save 4-5€.
It's possible to get the Amica fare on the ICPlus trains which is 20% off. These fares require advance purchase of at least 24 hours and the discount can sell out. The same thing is possible for an ICPlus train from Rome to Salerno which doesn't involve changing trains in Naples. Your cost for ICPlus for both your routes will be about 17-18€ with the Amica discount.
