Anyone fly to Paris from Austin Texas?
As many of you have read my posts know, we are planning a trip to Paris and Amsterdam next May. We plan to stay about 9 or 10 days. We do plan to fly open jaws. If anyone has flown there what is a airfare range I can expect? I know that I can probably get better fares from Houston or Dallas but we don't want to drive a long distance. I am expecting to pay $800-1000. Am I thinking right?

You may be able to do it for even a bit less. Since the best connections might be achieved by using more than one carrier on this itinerary, it could be one of those times when it is worthwhile to work with a good travel agent.

Actually, Continental just gave me a fare for AUS-CDG and AMS-AUS open jaw at $654 for dates 5/10 and 5/19/05. Might be a little higher if you travel on a weekend. CO is my favorite to Europe and they do fly out of Austin.
If business is slow they may have a sale with a slightly lower rate closer to your dates, but this is not a bad fare - and the dates are at the beginning of high season.

I don't get it. You'll need to switch plane once from Austin to Paris anyways, whether it is Houston (CO), Atlanta (DL), Chicago (UA & AA), Dallas (AA) or somewhere else.
I fly CO primarily and like, but there's no reason to limit yourself to that airline. See what fares there are out there, best times/connections, and FF mileage (if you fly enough).

Good morning to a fellow Austinite!! Whenever I book a ticket to Europe, I always look at the difference as if I were flying from Houston or Dallas, and it's never enough of a savings to justify the drive from Austin. I recently booked a ticket on AA to Paris in January and the difference if I were flying from Dallas is only about $30. As previously suggested, look at Orbitz, Expedia or Travelocity, then go from there.
Gretchen, maybe I am reading this wrong, but your post seems to indicate that it would have to be CO from Austin. I respectfully disagree. I have flown all over the world starting in Austin, but never on CO. Although we do not have non-stop flights to Europe yet, we are served by all of the major airlines, so there are plenty to choose from.

Good morning fellow Austinites!
This weekend I booked tickets to Stockholm from Austin on AA and noticed something interesting. If I plugged in AUS to ARN (Stockholm) the itineraries took me from Austin to Dallas to chicago to London to Stockholm (whew) and the price was $1200. If I clicked on "multicity" then I could put in Aus to DFW, then DFW to Stockholm and not only did I get much better connections (AUS-DFW_Frankfurt-Stockholm) but the price dropped to $608. Crazy.

Wow, never realized there were that many Austinites on the board! I've flown to CDG a few times. I like the CO flight thru Houston, though it's usually late on the return leg and I miss my connection to Austin (but there's always a later flight, plus I have friends in Houston if I get stranded). These flights were usually $650 in shoulder season. But one time I did Northwest, on a jiggy route through Detroit, then back via Amsterdam w/ KLM. The price was cheap, but the seats horribly uncomfortable, and the transfer time in Amsterdam almost too short, plus they lost my bag.
So I think CO is a good bet, plus maybe American through DFW? Personally I prefer only one connection, at a point close to home.

I looked at CO for my upcoming Paris trip, but chose AA because of better scheuduling and price. I will have only 1 connection through DFW, and I'm with you, Kate, I like only one connection, close to home. I'm still hoping for the day we see non-stops to Europe from Austin!!
Some time we should have a Fodors GTG here in Austin.

Be sure to check with Delta. They are a code share partner with Air France, and I recently purchased tickets for a March 2005 trip to Paris for $530 on a non-stop round trip from Houston. The Air France flights leave Houston at 4:30pm and arrive back at 12:50pm, so making connections to and from Austin should be easy, and by booking the entire trip through Delta you won't be liable for a missed connection in Houston.

First, let me say that $530 for a IAH-CDG roundtrip is not a good price. We flew for about $350 this past March, so did many others from various US cities.
Now, back to the original question:
The price Seamus gives you is about right for a AUS-CDG, AMS-AUS type open-jaw itinerary. About $650-700. CO via IAH, DL via ATL, CVG or IAH (IAH means Air France code-share to CDG).
I also looked up AUS-AMS roundtrip for May. If you fly Mon-Wed in early May, it's $619 on CO, NW or KL. AUS-CDG is about $650. So, it seems like if you want to cover those two cities, the open-jaw route is a decent deal. $650-700 is about right for May travel to Europe.

rkkwan, well it looks like I overpaid.
For future reference, please let me know where and when to look for these good airfares. I had been visiting travel sites like expedia and travelocity as well as most of the airline's own web sites for a couple of months prior to making my puchase and found prices for our dates of travel to be significantly (50% to 75%)higher. When I finally saw the $530, I grabbed it.
Did I act too soon? Will better deals be available closer to my departure date?
Thanks.

I was really only thinking about the direct flight from IAH to CDG on CO as being really convenient and getting a good night's sleep. I am not in Austin and should have realized that it is undoubtedly well served. And in spite of getting a $350 fare in March, I don't think that willhappen in May.
