Anyone Ever Used Venice Parking Garage?

Has anyone ever used the Piazza Roma parking garage in Venice? http://www.veneziaunica.it/en/conten...-roma-car-park

We have a large, obviously American car, and we will be in Venice 2 nights. While preparing to reserve a parking place and reading the fine print it sais that "as a fire-prevention cars parked inside must be left unlocked with the keys attached". I feel like our car will be like a sitting duck sticking out among the smaller local cars.

That does not exactly inspire confidence. This means we can't leave anything in the trunk. What is to stop some kind of random mischief to the interior? (we've been "keyed" before) I'm not comfortable with this and I don't think I can sell this to my husband.

Please don't just tell me to leave the car at home and trake the train; we are already committed to car travel for this multiple-stop trip.

Can cars parked on the very top of the structure in the open maybe have their cars locked? Reviews on the Mestre car parks did not sound encouraging as far as security and my husband has mobility issues so we need to be as close as possible.

Any suggestions or other options are greatly appreciated!

We used the parking garage several years ago and parked on top of the structure. We locked the car and had no problem but don't remember this policy at that time. I wouldn't leave a car for several days with the keys in it, even if I took everything out.

Your question made me curious, so I googled--this looks like a different garage in the Piazzale Roma--you could ask them about locking the car on this site.

We have parked a car there twice - but were not told to leave it unlocked with keys in it which is ridiculous.

Left things in the trunk both time (once 3 nights, one 4) and ha no problems.

I would be happy giving a key to an attendant to keep in a locked box but not the car open with a key.

And we back the car into a spot by the wall so was next to impossible to get into the trunk.

Perhaps there is more than one garage at Piazzale Rome?

I've also parked at Ple. Roma twice, possibly three times. Locked the car.

There was no one to talk to or ask about it, though.

Hi
We also left our car in a garage in Venice, walking distance to the water ferry into Venice. We never had to leave the car unlocked. We were only there 2 nights and left most of the luggage in the trunk. We did park in the interior, very near the guard station, where it was very well lit.
Also made sure that nothing was left visible in the interior and it was very neat (since we were told a sign of American tourists is a messy interior).

Cannot imagine leaving the car unlocked!

Thanks, all. I guess we'll try the close-in lot first and if we are verbally told we can't lock the car, we'll back-track to Tronchetto parking.

There are TWO garages at Piazzale Roma and ONE garage at Tronchetto. Depending on which lot people used as well as consistency in applying rules, people would have had different experiences.

The garages at <u>Piazzale Roma</u>
(Between Venezia Santa Lucia station and the cruise port. The ones people mention as having to leave keys. More expensive than Tronchetto but closer to Venice proper)
- Autorimessa Communale http://www.asmvenezia.it/
- Garage San Marco http://www.garagesanmarco.it/

The garage at <u>Tronchetto</u>
(The one on an island next to the cruise port but further away from the Venice proper.)

From Tronchetto, if you are heading straight to San Marco area, take #2 Vaporetto(ACTV) in Giudecca direction. If you are heading down the Grand Canal, take #2 the Grand Canal direction. There are two Vaporetto docks located in the middle of the Tronchetto facing the cruise boats. Choose the dock indicating the direction you want to travel.
If you are heading to Piazzale Roma anyway, take the people mover monorail. The monorail terminal is at the base of the island = more walking.

I was going to reserve a place, but when I saw in the fine print about leaving the keys in the car, I thought that by reserving on line I basically would be agreeing to the terms. Since we would decline using the lot if actually pressed into leaving the keys inside, I didn't want to be charged the amount for a full day days fee.

Hopefully mid-May isn't that busy because we'll try it without reservation...hope arriving Saturday afternoon around 4 won't be too late in the day. We'll try for close-in first, and if we are hassled about keys/not locking at the entrance or there's no more room, we'll circle back to Tronchetto.

Thanks for the details, Greg.
