Any safety issues in Munich?
My daughter and I will be in Munich a couple of nights and wondering what to
do at night. Is it safe for us to use the public transportation and wander the street of Munich after dark? Any areas to avoid or things to watch out for? We lived in Bavaria in the 70's and never thought about safety but not sure about current situation. Thanks!

The biggest safety issue that I encountered in Munich was after an evening of beer drinking in the beer garden, while walking back to our hotel (a few blocks), my sandals just would not stay on my feet. They were slides, so no back to keep them secure. It was the weirdest thing - never had a problem with those sandals before, but they just kept sliding off my feet, which made walking very treacherous. I am sure the 2 liters of beer that I consumed over the course of the evening had nothing to do with this strange phenomenon.
In all seriousness though, Munich is a very safe place. Even the dodgy-looking areas around the main train station aren't dangerous - they just don't look especially nice.
If you rent bikes and ride around in central Munich, do be careful in traffic though - there are a lot of bike lanes, but there can be a lot of traffic too, so you have to watch carefully. Riding through the English Garden and other parks on a nice day is absolutely lovely though.

Whatever your daughter does to keep safe where she is now is what she should do in Germany and she will be fine.

You do have to visit the Hofbrauhaus, just to see what it's all about.
On the ground floor, look at the ceilings and the way they slope up for smoke to go. This is where Hitler first stood on the tables and shouted out his beliefs.
The oom-pah band is also worth listening to.
You can have dinner on the second floor, as there is a very large restaurant.
I've been to Munich more than 10 times on business. My trips all lasted more than a week each.

disclaimer: I know nothing about safety in German cities.
But as a female solo traveler, I like to know where I'm going after dark and not "wander" around after dark anywhere (which I think can make you appear vulnerable or potentially end up in a less desirable part of town).
