I will be in Slovenia, Croatia, and a touch of Venice in late October (2 couples). We are considering Otocec Castle as kind of a base for several days with day trips. Any thoughts?
The tentative itinerary (with flight into Venice) is:
Otocec - day trip to Ljubljana Sunday market
Otocec - day trip to Predjama Castle
Otocec - day trip to Plitvice National Park
or Zagreb depending on the weather
Pula (or other Istrian town) for 2 nights
Venice for 2 nights
I am open for suggestions but I have to be reasonable and know that Dubrovnik or Split and other places like that are way too far. The number of nights in Venice is pretty much set as well. The 5 nights that are currently listed as Otocec and Pula are very flexible. Thanks in advance. Tim

I haven't answered this before because I wasn't sure what you were thinking. Using Otecec as a base, although nice, didn't seem to make much sense because it isn't that central. I believe you have one week and want to check out Croatia as well as Slovenia? Have you been to either before. If you haven't been to Slovenia before I would drop the Zagreb and/or Plivitce portion and concentrate on Slovenia. That is just MHO.
My suggestions/thoughts are:
Istrian town...visit Rovinj instead, though do visit the Pula Amphitheater.
Skip Croatia and add Bled and Bohinj. Even when it is cool, they are gorgeous.
Do Ljubljana on a weekday when the city is at its most vibrant.
