Any good beers in Italy?
In all my travels to Europe, I have always been a big fan of good quality beers. I always try the local brews where I go. However, I have always felt that the beer in Italy was very bad. In fact, an Italian told me that the number one beer in Italy was Heineken! Anyway, after having so many bad experiences with the Italian beers I have come to the conclusion that when in Italy, drink wine.

Has anyone ever had a really good Italian beer? (And I hope that I don't just get responses from 17 and 18 year olds that went to Italy and got smashed and were just happy to be drinking alcohol).
Here's a July 1999 article you might find interesting, about brewpubs in Italy. It says "After one or two false starts, brewpubs seem finally to be establishing themselves in Italy."

http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-000198.html

And here's an article about Italian brewing. This article notes that "In the last 25 years, per capita consumption of beer [in Italy] has more than doubled, to around 27 liters per year (compared to about 160 liters per year in the beer-devoted Czech Republic, and about 77 in the United States). In the same period, wine consumption has been cut in half, from 104 to 51.5 liters." and also tips its hat to microbrews in the U.S., saying "The dream of all lovers of craft beer in Italy is to reproduce the fantastic adventure of the Americans, great protagonists of an extraordinary beer renaissance."

http://www.allaboutbeer.com/features/216italbrew.html

There are three major Italian breweries to consider, Peroni, Moretti and Poretti. Italian pilsners are lighter than those you encounter in the Germanic and Slavic countries. Try Peroni's Nastro Azzuro or its Raffo for examples. Moretti has two dark beers, Bruna and La Rossa; the latter looks, but happily doesn't taste like, Killian Red. For a really copper red malty beer, try Poretti's Splugen Fumee. With the increased interest in beer by Italians, most major European breweries have introduced their brands to Italy, particularly true in northern Italy.
