We were in a few European countries last fall. I bought the Telestial $49AM phone. Now my daughter is using it on her 6 month trip to Asia/Aust.

Canadian..Australian...American...

This is the 21st century; you don't rent cell phones anymore...you buy an inexpensive gsm unlocked phone available readilly on ebay starting from about $50 (the nice thing is I no longer have to differentiate US$ from CA$ in posts eh)...then when you arrive in Italy you go into a mobile phone store and purchase a prepaid sim card to insert in the unlocked (just make sure it has 900 mhz and 1800 mhz frequencies)...the sim pack costs €10 with €5 of service and voila you're all set and the phone is yours to keep forever and forever.

Lots of info available...go to www.prepaidgsm.net where there is a forum with people who actually know what they're talking about not some of the know nothings (in all due respect as some people here do get it but many don't)who put out lots of misinformation here (unlike me).

I'm going to Greece in May and wanted a phone that would work with no hassles and no need to look for a SIM card upon arrival.

I searched around settled on a tri
band phone from callineurope.com...
the calls will be billed to my credit card monthly. The whole deal cost $60 including delivery.

I considered going the eBay route
but was looking for the minimum
of hassles.

anabelle,

Cheapest way is use your existing phone.

I used my Rogers-capable phone when I went to Turkey. I had it unlocked, then simply bought a SIM card while there, on a couple of occasions. If you have a Bell phone, you may be out of luck.

No need to have a diferent phone for travel versus at home. If you do have a Bell phone, then maybe consider getting another one off of ebay, as suggested for travel purposes

I have a Fido phone. Fido told me it would cost $250 to unlock it. But I went to my friendly Fido outlet, and they gave me a business card for someone who would unlock it for a small fraction of that. I haven't done it, though.

Fido charges me $2 or $3 per minute to call or receive when in Europe, depending on the country. The price is exorbitant, but I only use the phone very rarely. Text messages are 40 cents to send or receive.
