I need to know if I purchase a German Rail Pass how much more will it cost to go to Strasbourg, France and also Innsbruck. I will be staying in Munich to enjoy the Christmas Markets. I have searched the DBBahn website and cannot seem to get the information I need. I am hoping some good Fodorites will be able to help me.

Tickets to Strasbourg and Innsbruck will not be expensive because each city is near the German border. Ask the company you are buying your pass from for their price but the added cost will be much less if you buy the out of Germany portion in Germany when you get there. You might want to pull up schedules for about 60 days out at www.bahn.de , for Kehl-Strasbourg and Kufstein-Innsbruck (or Mittenwald-Innsbruck). These should price, to give you a sense of costs, and you could purchase these tickets at any station in Germany, and depending on the fare, online.

It's only 4 Euros each way from Kehl to Strasbourg, but that is for regional trains - - if you are on an EC train or something fast and supplement-rich out of Germany, then you will also pay the EC supplement, but if you pull up schedules for one to two months out, you should see them clearly.

If you buy an add-on ticket (full-flex rate) from the border at Kufstein to Innsbruck, that's 17.60 euros. And a day on you pass gone.

If you just go online in advance to www.bahn.de/en you can buy a Munich-Innsbruck ticket for as little as 19 euros each way, no pass required. Tat's far better value!

To figure out how much more you will have to pay after leaving German territory simply put in the border station - like Mittenwald to say Innsbruck - then that will be the supplemental ticket you would have to buy.

Ditto for Kehl to Strasbourg as dfourh explains above.

But to nab those limited in number discounted savings fare means booking weeks in advance to guarantee them and then it's from 19 euros - often more than that - and those tickets are non-changeable and subject to a 15 euro cancellation fee - so kind of booked in stone.

If you want flexibility to chose which trains to take once there then the pass provides just that - and such fully flexible fares often cost a ton - so it all depends on whether you want to book weeks in advance for a specific train or just go to the station and hop any train anytime as with the pass.

Those 'from 19 euro fares' are great for folks knowing exactly then they will travel but again it's from - it could be higher for the train you want to take.

What are your plans on the train (or Rhine boats, some are covered in full by the pass) - if you are mainly staying in the Munich area and doing day trips the Bavarian Lander Ticket gives you for 27 euros (and up to five folks or something like that all for the same 27 euros) unlimited rides on regional trains and also urban transports.

And then nab a discounted ticket from www.bahn.de/en to go to Strasbourg - but if doing other long-distance trains other places then the pass can be as cheap as a string of discounted tickets and give you the ultimate flexibility to hop virtually any train anytime.

What are your rail plans in Germany - make a difference as to the efficacy of a pass.
