Another Switzerland Travel Question

Hi,

Looking for advice on which, if any, travel card that I should buy for travel in Switzerland.

Will arrive in Zurich and either take train, taxi, or bus(?) to Marriott hotel. I know the train is the best option but am concerned with steep steps on/off the train while carrying luggage. If a bus is available, I'd prefer that so I can throw the luggage underneath.

Will be picking up a rental car upon leaving Zurich and dropping in Geneva upon arrival. Geneva is my departure city. No questions or discussion on the rental car, please... it's a done deal that I'm not giving up. I like stopping in little towns when the mood hits me! ;-)

I'm planning on doing the following via public transportation:

Boat from Zurich to Rapperwil with return by train (seems the 9 o'clock day pass for 24 CHF in 2nd class is a good value for this)

Boat from Luzern to Fluelen with return by train

Boat from Interlaken on Lake Brienz, bus to Ballenberg open air museum, and back to Interlaken (I assume there is a train which would be faster than a return by boat?)

Train/cable car/buses - Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen to Murren to Gimmelwald to Stechelberg to Interlaken

Maybe some kind of boat trip on Lake Geneva

So, my question is... is there a pass that would be cost-beneficial to these trips or should I just buy individual tickets? I haven't found any tickets like the Zurich 9 o'clock ticket in other cities. And, honestly, my head is spinning looking at all of these different ticket options!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Firstly you will not be able to put luggage under a bus. You will need to keep it with you, so I would suggest you take the train from the airport. Secondly with your travel plans I have to suggest you need to do the maths, use the Swiss Rail website and remember that some of the passes give you extras, like free transport on the public transport in the cities and towns. The Swiss Pass also gives you entrance to Museums including Ballenberg.

As you're doing excursions all over Switzerland a local or regional pass won't be of much help. Like you said, no such passes for one day are available in the Lucerne or Interlaken area. So, only one of the passes from Swisstravel association may be helpful.

Like the previous poster said, calculate the exact cost for the day trips you listed above first. I cannot imagine the Swiss Pass or Swiss Flexi Pass would pay off as you don't plan to do *long* and *expensive* trips. So, only the Half Fare Card for one month might be an option, but it is 110 CHF at the moment - and gives a reduction of 50%.

eurocheapo.com City Guides budget tips

ggenerally for me cheap regional trains best

Things very expensive due to clueless politicos debasing USD

causing US credit/dowgrade debacle will get worse.

Paid $7 for a Big Mac in Zurich when there last

I shudder to think of how expensive it will get.

Maybe the chocolate will still be cheap...

Train services to the main rail station (HB) operated 7 - 8 times an hour, with average journey ...

This is the one you want from the FlugHaven(airport)

If you have rolling luggage the trip into the city from the airport AND to the Marriott is easy.

When you exit the main entrance from the train station in the city look to your LEFT. You'll see the Marriott right up the street. It is no more than a five-minute walk (basically flat) from the station entrance to the hotel.
