Angsting over what to wear (and what else?) for the Greek Islands cruise.....

It's a moment of insomnia, and I'm angsting about what to wear for the Greek islands cruise! Seriously! The last couple of days it suddenly hit me how close it is, that next month I'll be on a ship for 3 weeks in an area in which I have no experience, and that I have no clue what to take! (or..more likely...what I need to buy...eek!). And then there's the question of what else I should be angsting or otherwise thinking about at this point, that I'm overlooking! Wise Fodorites.....help!

Are you obsessing over what others may think of your wardrobe? To me this seems counterproductive to a fun and relaxing vacation. Why not take what makes you feel good, wear it and be done with the angst?

I just got back this past weekend from my Greek vacation:5 days in Athens, 6 days in Crete, and 6 days in Santorini. I also did a cruise to many of the Islands years ago in the month of September. While there this past time, I took summer clothes in addition to one sweater, one light jacket and a parka in case of rain, which it did not. All was just right. You’ll be there at a warmer time so I suggest “summer” clothes with “layering” in mind for the evenings. The wind does pick up at night. Definitely make sure you have comfortable walking shoes since you will encounter cobblestone streets. Everyone is different in regards to weather tolerance. My husband gets cold easily so he brought many more sweaters and turtlenecks while I was in short sleeve tops. We are from California along the coast and the weather was similar to ours this time of year. The women and young girls in Greece wore a variety of clothes and dressed much more casual than what I saw women in Italy wearing, if that helps. On the ship, I don’t know if you will want to “dress-up” for dinner or late night events. But, in Greece, it won’t be necessary unless it is your desire. Enjoy. I know you will have a fantastic time.

Akin, your insights are so helpful! In particular, I hadn't thought about the evenings being cool. Also, I wasn't aware of the cobblestone streets. Sounds like my dad and I both should pack our "travel canes" to keep our balance.

Our first week is in 3 different hotels (Marriott Athens Ledra, Amalia Hotel Delphi, and Nafplia Palace Hotel). Then we spend a week on a 45 person yacht/sailboat called the Pantheon. Then the last week we go back to the Marriott in Athens and to the Lato Hotel Crete. Do you have any idea about the availability of laundry facilities in any of these places? I'm thinking I'll just pack a week's worth of clothes and plan to wash them--more than one suitcase sounds burdensome. Although I'm fine with washing things out in the sink, it would be nice to know if there are likely to be other options along the way.

Also I heard that women don't wear shorts in Greece. Did you notice that? I don't know whether that's a fashion, religious, or cultural issue, but I figure it's easy to respect that.

I'm thinking cotton, linen, and rayon tops and pants, plus a dress or two to wear with sandals. I had thought of a rain jacket, but now I'll consider a sweater or something for evenings. (That also inspires me to pack a warmer nightgown since I tend to easily get cold while sleeping.) I've noticed a lot of "travel" clothes have at least some amount of polyester in them...although it's durable and wrinkle-free, I also think of it as being hot. I've been assuming those clothes aren't meant for travel to warm places, but maybe I'm misunderstanding something? I ordered my first pair of tencel jeans. I've never had tencel before.

Oh! and to BrotherLeeLove...I think my angst is a girl thing! In some ways, we have too many options in clothes--so there's more to think about than with guys I think. I want to take clothes that will be comfortable for the climate and not pack a bunch of things I end up hauling around but not wearing. I'm not actually all that concerned about what anyone else thinks of my wardrobe. I want to do things and see things and just be presentable and inoffensive while I'm doing so. ;-)

Any and all input is appreciated.

Ellen

I wore shorts in Greece with no problems. Just be sure to bring light clothing - the sun is hot! And a hat or two for sure. In Athens I mostly wore shorts with sneakers. In Spetses and Santorini I wore skirts and shorts during the day or a sun dress over my bathing suit. And I stuck mostly to sandals on the islands. Just easier and fun. In the evenings I think you just need a light sweater to put on when it's breezy. I did not wear long pants (jeans or khakis) at all except on the flights over and back. I would also stay away from too much linen because it wrinkles so easily.

Hope that helps. I'm not sure about the laundry services available to you at the hotels.

Off your question, but a tip you will thank me for. We stayed at the Marriott in Athens, and had the most phenomenal dessert in their dining room. It is served and looks like a pizza, but is absolutely to die for! As to wardrobe, you have received many good tips. Keep in mind, you will see a range of attire from very casual during the days on the islands to smarter attire in the cities in the evening.
