Let's hope that the hot chocolate remains as good but that the pastries improve.

I've never been there but on other forums I visit, they say the food is not very good (canned mushrooms)
Anyone also think the food is not very good?

Canned mushrooms at Angelina or Lipp?

I think most people go to Angelina for "tea", since it's that type of food that it is known for. I had a salad there at lunchtime once, and it was fine but nothing special. Faded old dame elegante that it is, I still love to have my requisite Mont Blanc once per trip.

At Lipp I have have the choucroute garnie, and thought it was great. And we even got seated on the first floor!

It should be interesting to see how this all turns out.

Interesting post. My wife and I stopped in during May, 2002 and had the obligatory hot chocolate...which was excellent. We sat next to a table occupied by two very Parisian individuals who had stoped in for lunch. They had a very elaborate lunch including courses of salad, fish etc. While speaking with them they seemed amazed that Americans were there drinking hot chocolate. Their explanation was that it must have been featured in travel guides. I think this was one time that the tourists knew more about what to order than the locals!

Sorry to hear about Angelina's being sold. This past May I stopped by for lunch and was very disappointed in the food. 3 years prior I had been there and found the food to be good. Angelina's just seemed tired during this last visit.

Always found Angelina's had monumentally rude staff. Hot chocolate was excellent, but it did leave a sour taste in one's mouth with the snotty attitude. Maybe Lipp will "up" its staff

Count us as totally underwhelmed by Angelina's. Staff was reluctant to serve (and we're used to Paris, so this wasn't some cultural thing) and there were dishes left on the tables surrounding us.

Whatever poster used the word "tired" is brilliant--the whole place had that feel to us.

We like the hot chocolate--however, on Ile de St. Louis, my little one was able to get a takeout chocolate chaud of similar quality with speed and a genuine smile.

I don't see the sale as a big deal. Lipp also owns Brasserie Balzar next to the Sorbonne and that hasn't hurt its popularity.
However, I was never a fan of Angelina's. I can get wonderful hot chocolate at La Maison du Chocolat off the Place Victor Hugo in a more stylish salon with infinitely more congenial service.

Reading an old review of Angelina's and not only do they mention the shabby interior but that the cutlery is so flimsy that only a chemical analysis would prove it is really made of metal but they do think this tourist destination's offer of chocolat á l'African is worth it
A favorite place for Parisans is La Charlotte de l'Isle on the Ile St-Louis. Her hot chocolate was called "The absinthe of hot chocolate."
For regular chocolates, La Maison du Chocolate was rated tops.

I think that the flimsy cutlery/metal thing about Angelina was in a Times review. I remember laughing about it.

But for what it's worth, the French in Action series (available on PBS) mentions Angelina in one of the episodes. If I remember right, Closerie des Lilas makes an apperance there also.

I actually ate in Brasserie Lipp (2000 or 2002?) and I liked it.
