Are you having that 4-hr stop at the airport as someone posted yesterday - if so this is why several folks suggested Ostia Antica over your preferred visit to the Colosseum in Rome proper.
and yes if the 18 yr old was knowledgeable a bit about Osita Antica the visit would be very interesting - the old fish market, the rather ribald pictures in places and the general site.
But IME 18 kids are often not interested in anything that adults are as tourists....

I recently changed planes in Rome. The time between flights was two hours each way and I needed almost all of that time. It took a while to exit the plane and then get everyone on buses to the terminal. There was a long line for passport control and then a long walk to the next gate. I would not leave the Rome airport with a 4 hour layover.

I would agree with both adrienne and RJD's advice to stay put in the airport and not even go out thru Customs and passport control - never know how long lines can be to get back into transit area.

Ostia-antica.org is wonderful intact harbor town better than Pompeii in many ways for me.
Sadly 4 hours would not be enough time u would need an overnite and half day at leat
Aran Blu hotel is pretty close at Lido where I stayed for this last
Or any hotel in the Ostiense area
Do not cram or you will miss your flight
