Ok, so my wonderful girlfriend is leaving in a few days to study in Montpellier for six months (while I stay in scenic Mississippi). I really wanted to be able to do something nice for her while she is there, and what I had in mind was somehow having flowers shipped to her on Valentine's day. Could anyone tell me how to go about doing this, what company to use, how to pay, what to watch out for, ect...

We sent flowers to a friend in London when she was sick, it is sort of easy

The only problem is when using services like Interflora (which a local florist will often use when doing an international delivery liek this) is that the service fees really add up. I would rather spend the money on the flowers! Try to find a local florist, and contact them directly. You'll get more, for the cost of a phone call. Perhaps a hotel there can recommend a florist and give yout he contact info is all else fails.

If you go on any search engine and type in "Montpellier", "fleuriste" you will get inundated with listings.

Many are for huge internet florists with no particular connection to Montpellier.

But if you scroll through them you will find some local ones, even some with email or website addresses.

taggie, I'm not sure how it works when ordering from the US for Europe, but I've learned that you usually get better deals from Intrafloral or FTD than dealing direct with local florists. I sent an ordered FTD funeral arrangement up north from Florida and it was spectacular (for $90). We had a communication gap and my brother ordered one from the local florist there for $125. It ended up they were from the same florist. The $90 was spectacular -- as displayed on line. The one he got was pretty skimpy -- and yes, pretty much the exact same flowers.
A local florist here was charging almost twice as much for a dozen Valentine roses last year if ordered from them than if you called Teleflora and ordered them over the phone and specified from that same florist. And yes, they were the exact same roses. To be a member of those organizations, they have to honor the prices of the advertised arrangements.

"Calyx and Corolla" has a catalog with the most beautiful flowers I've ever sent anywhere - orchids and roses and exotic lilies.

Wonderful crystal vases and great containers of various types are also available for the flowers.

I didn't look them up, but I'm sure if you google them, you'll find it.

I love it when I get flowers from them, and I've gotten rave reviews from everyone who has received them from us.

The number one internet florist in France is called "Aquarelle": www.aquarelle.com. They have been in business for quite a while and are absolutely reliable. They ship throughout France.

I used FTD to send flowers to a friend's family after his father died in Dorset, UK (I'm in the US). Ordering flowers internationally was very simple to do online at www.ftd.com. You simply click on the international deliveries button and then you choose the country and thumbnails will come up of the selections available. The total delivery fee and international fee came to less than $25. I thought that was a bargain given how easy the transaction was and my friend said the flowers were beautiful. FTD uses local florists.
