You see this in Manhattan, where only the young with no dependents or the rich are willing to pay $6 for two tablespoons of prepared cranberry tuna salad at places like Whole Foods.

Somehow, I'm guessing that what this developer has in mind would make Whole Foods look like 7-11. Personally, I don't like any of the Whole Foods prepared foods I've sampled. I'm guessing I might like the cheeses, meats and baked goods in the Haut Marais.

Kathie, the fruits and vegetables from Trader Joes are so bad, had to throw out so much so now I'll try whole foods if I don't have to throw out bad food

Some of Whole Foods produce is very nice - some not. The best produce they have is what they have purchased from local farmers.

Our local newspaper did a taste-test of prepared pies. They bought one from Whole Foods, another from a chain grocery store, another from a bakery. All were billed as having been baked on the premises. The Whole Foods pie was the most expensive, and it turned out to be moldy. They took it back and later that week saw that same pie still in the case!!!!

PS I've generally had good luck with Trader Joe's produce, but then I only buy lemons and limes, potatoes, and some salad greens there.

I'm sure that every store is different in how conscientious they are about policing the freshness of the produce.

I read some French articles about this plan. While it does not irritate me, I still think it will quickly fizzle.

A quote from the article: “We need to reinvent places in Paris to gain a competitive advantage over other cities,” said Jean-Louis Missika, a deputy mayor in charge of the urban renewal of Paris. “It’s an interesting idea, and it could be a new model for urban development — if it works.”

I would have thought that Paris already had a competitive advantage over most cities in the world and that "Disneyfying" an area of Paris would have the opposite effect. But looks like the land is bought, the existing businesses closed, and construction has advanced.

Who knows, maybe Paris will soon have all the charm of Las Vegas or Atlanta.
