We are travelling from Australia, and our travel agent has suggested The College Hotel, for a 3 night stay. We are middle age travellers on our first trip O/S.
From the website of the Hotel, they explain that the hotel is staffed by students, i.e. the hotel is a training institute. Our room is described as "standard double room", but I can't find this as a room type on the hotel's website. Does this infer it is going to be the smallest room in the house. I also am not sure if every room has it's own bathroom - the building having been built in 1895 - it may be the case that it is sharing bathrooms, my husband would not like this.
We have 3 nights to stay before joining a 15 day European River cruise, so would like a good quality hotel, in a central position, and perhaps in the general vicinity of the area where the river boats leave from. (I am still to find out where that is. We are travelling with APT for the river cruise).
Any feedback on this particular establishment would be appreciated.

It is in a more residential but stil central area of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a very easy town to get around in. And I don't think you would need to be close to where cruise leaves necessarily. Just plan to get a taxi or tram from the hotel when you are ready.
If you have any questions about the rooms or facilities your travel agent should be able to confirm by in writing such as as "will my room have its own bathroom?" or email the hotel (from the lovely photos on the website with the contemporary decor I would be very surprised if you would have to share a bathroom) info@thecollegehotel.com
I would assume a standard double room is what is called a superior double on the website, but you cold e-mail the hotel to check. It looks as though these rooms are in the roof, so the rooms may be an odd shape. All the rooms have a private bathroom. It says they are 22-28 sq metres in size.
the hotel is in a good position, a little away from the main centre, but close to the Rijks- and Van Gogh museums, and the Vondel Park.
The hotel is a Boutique hotel and generally gets good reviews. The students who staff the hotel are all doing a degree level course at the Hotel Management School in Amsterdam.
We didn't stay there (opted for Priceline)but I think Samantha Brown mentioned the hotel favorably on her "Passport to Europe" Travel Channel series.
