Hello,
I will be in London in mid-October (around Oct 15th) for a few days and was wondering if I should visit Amsterdam. How is the weather in Amsterdam that time of the year? Not only the weather but the city itself. A friend of mine visited Amsterdam a couple of days after New Year in January and found it nearly empty as if the city had packed up and gone home. While I prefer to avoid hordes of crowd like anyone else, I would rather see lively, vibrant streets rather than a ghost town
If the trip to Amsterdam is not worth it that time of the year, I could save it for some other time (though I don't know when that would be, could be a few years as I visit Europe once in a couple of years)

Last time I was in Amsterdam was end of November and it was delightful - few tourists, plenty of people out and about on the streets, decent weather with some clouds and a bit of rain but nothing severe, just lovely, really, except of course that the days were short. I think October would be great.
Weather will be similar to London, but possibly less rain. Naturally fewer tourists than midsummer, but still plenty of activity,
We were in Amsterdam around that time a couple of years ago. It was a little cool but not bad. We had rain one day in three. Plenty of people around, and lots of bicyclists! I think it will depend. You could get a couple of really nice days, or it could be rainy and cool. Just the luck of the draw.
Thanks for the responses. Note that the stay in London is more of a family occasion not for tourism per se so the weather in London isn't a concern (though it would be nice if it is nice).
I did go to London once I believe in late October and visited Bath and Cambridge as well. They were still leafy and green, albeit the effect of fall was evident, and it was warm enough to do the walks. It was certainly better than my other trip to London in March when it was much colder and windy and greenery had not yet returned.
We were in Amsterdam in October. The weather was cool with more rain than usual but we still enjoyed the city. Even the one evening with "gully washer" rains gave us some humorous travel memories.
Hopefully you will have sunny days and clear nights for your visit. Deborah
We were in Amsterdam mid-October 2010 and had a great week. We did get rain several days and it rained hard. That kind of stuff doesn't bother us, but it might you. No big crowds, no problem getting into restaurants. The only long line (and I mean LLOONNGG) was the Ann Frank house, but I understand that's a year-round situation.
You can bypass the lines at the Ann Frank House by purchasing tickets online at

Did you choose a hotel yet in Amsterdam?
If you have not found accommodation yet may I recommend that you look at this website first?

I have used it often and have found very nice, affordable places to stay.
Also, October tends to be warmer and sunnier these past few years than ever before. Last year
temperatures were still around the low seventies with sunny skies. Mind you, I like Amsterdam whatever the weather because there is so much you can do. Enjoy!
