BOOK A HOTEL NOW!!!
That's the main thing to be concerned about. It will be utterly hopeless if you wait too long, and I am not exaggerating.
It is a huge conference - attendance for 2004 was over 40,000.
I'll go out on a limb and guess it probably won't adversely affect your visit, since most conference-goers will be at the conference. You can make some dinner reservations and be OK on that score. Amsterdam is very walkable, you might need to supplement with a tram ride now and then but you could get by.
A hotel room is most important.

If you're going to be using the tram system you might stay away from hotels on the #4 line (chiefly the Rembrandtsplein area). The #4 is the main line between the RAI convention center and the center of Amsterdam.
