There are regular trains from Schiphol airport into town, and you can take a tram from the central station to most hotels. I have used Priceline or Hotwire a few times for Amsterdam. As long as you can live with no changes/cancellations to your hotel reservation and don't mind not knowing the exact property until you have booked, you can save a lot of money with them. Try www.BetterBidding.com to check out what people have been getting recently with Priceline or Hotwire, to see what hotels you might get in which zones, at what price.

And for public transport all can be found on the airport's website.

Trains leave the airport for Amsterdam Centraal about once every 15 minutes. You can buy tickets from the machines at the head of the escalators leading down to the rail platforms.

There is also a ticket window near those machines however if you use the window to buy your ticket there may be a surcharge of about 1 Euro tacked onto the price.

IMO the train is probably the best and cheapest way to get onto the city. We have used a taxi in the past (much more expensive) as well as a shuttle ( cheaper than a taxi and a lot slower than the train).

If you DO take the train onto the city do NOT leave any luggage unattended near the doors.

Check out: www.bedandbreakfast.nl

It might be a challenge to find accommodation for under USD 100 though. Public transportation is really excellent though and everything is within circle of a maximum of 20 minutes by tram or bus so it would be cheaper to stay out of the center of Amsterdam when trying to find accommodation.

If you go to Booking.com and put in your dates you can then put in your price range and see what comes up. $100 is low for an Amsterdam hotel, but there are some at that price.

You don't say when you are planning to visit. Spring is peak season really due to the bulb fields, and September is conference season. Prices are higher for both.

You might consider Haarlem or another nearby town if you can't find anything in your price range.

Shar:

You might want to investigate Hotel Museumzicht which is located in the Museumplein, the plaza where you'll find the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and concert hall. I'm booked there in May and got a single room for 100 euros. I'll be sharing a bathroom on the floor. There are rooms with private baths. This is no frills (no TVs in the room or phone) but it gets uniformly strong reviews from travelers, who praise the staff, the breakfast, the hotel's cleanliness, and its location, which includes the nearby tram line.

Here's the website:
