Amsterdam districts - Liedsplein, Jordaan, Vondelpark, please explain
I've heard numerous mentions of districts that make up Amsterdam but I am not familiar with them. We are trying to find a hotel in a nice & convenient area for a reasonable price. Please help explain. Thanks.

AMS, I think it depends on what you're looking for. They are all areas, not terribly far from eachother. Amsterdam is VERY easy to navigate by public transportation so wherever you choose you will be reasonably close to attractions.

For reasonable price, consider the Museumplein (about 3 blocks from Vondelpark and maybe 5 from the Liedsplein). I like Hotel Fita (www.fita.nl). From there you can walk many places, or take the #2 or #5 tram to the DamSquare, Centraal Station, the flower market...... If you are willing to spend a little more I like Hotel American at the Liedsplein. It's a very art nouveau place with extremely comfortable rooms. You can often get great rates on better places by booking on Hotel-Booker.com

Whatever you do, steer clear of the Centraal Station area (although there are some very nice hotels there) or the Dam Square. Too noisey, too crowded and pretty grungy.

Grasshopper wrote
>Whatever you do, steer clear of the Centraal Station area ...<

Brings to mind that when I took my wife on her first trip to Amsterdam the VVV found us an inexpensive hotel near the Station.

Except that various women and men kept going in and out of the rooms next to us all night, it was quite pleasant.

Hi Grasshopper. Thanks for the suggestions. I checked out Hotel Fita but they are closed during Jan 16. Can you recommend another hotel in the Liedsplein area, maybe within walking distant of Rijksmuseum and good restaurants. Our budget is around $100/night for a double. Thanks so much.

AMS... we stay at the Hotel Washington (see rants and raves) in the Museumplein, just west of the green and east of the Van Gogh museum. Easy to access by tram to and from Centraal Station and everywhere else. Just a few blocks from the Concertgebouw and musicians stay there. We heard a lovely piano piece outside of the first floor a few years ago.

I have only stayed at 2 hotels in Amsterday thus far, both near Leidseplein /Museumplein area, which is a great place to be.
AMS Hotel Terdam - twin/doubles $150 so higher than you want. Higher than I wanted the 2nd trip, so tried AMS Hotel Holland for $90/twin. It was much more 'budget', but decent enough. My only complaint was some mold on bathroom ceiling, but bedding and fixtures were clean. The breakfast room and the food was fine. This would be a place where I'd ask to see the room first, before paying.
I wanted to stay at Prinsen Hotel but it was full; their doubles are around $115-130. Stopped in and got a brochure, place looked very nice.
Another future choice will be Hotel Piet Hein, around $110-120.
I booked online through www.bookings.nl, then followed up with the hotel via email (or fax, I forget). The AMS web is www.ams.nl, but the rooms are less on bookings.nl - hope all this helps a little.

We rent out our tastefully and modern decorated apartment in Amsterdam for short stays.

It is an elegant, spaciously designed apartment on the third floor of a modern building with an elevator.
You will find all the comforts of home: a seperate bedroom with a queensize double bed, a comfortable living room with a corner sofa and a diningarea, a fully equipped kitchen with a second dining area and a bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink.
The appartment is equipped with 2 color tv's with cable connection, one in the living room and one in the bedroom, a VCR, a stereo system and a high speed internet connection.
The livingroom faces the balcony where you can admire the lively squandering of the neighbourhood street. The appartment is located in 'De Pijp' (also called the Quartier latin of Amsterdam), just around the corner of the famous daily Albert Cuyp market, behind the Heineken Brewery and on walking distance from the museum quarter. De Pijp is currently one of the trendiest and most upcoming neighbourhoods of the city with lots of nice restaurants, bars and shops

Check out our website:
http://home.tiscali.nl/amsterdam/

For more info email us on: [email protected]

I used to stay at the Hotel Roemer Vischer. It's a block or two off Leidseplein and will give you the real Dutch hotel experience. This time I am changing to the AMS City Centre Hotel because they had a really cheap rate on all the hotel finding sites and because I wanted to be just a little farther away from the casino! It's right off one of the main streets in Amsterdam so I'm wondering about the noise level.

One thing I'll say is to check the Orbitz/Travelocity,etc and see what comes up in your price range. These cheaper rates are NOT on the individual hotel websites.
