I like the area of Leidseplein, canal rings, around Vondelpark, or the Jordaan. All slightly more residential and much nicer than the central area around the train station imo.
I enjoyed the Tropenmuseum (which is kind of a wacky but interesting place). Also Vondelpark.
Don't know about day trips, I easily spent my 5 days right in the city.
I personally like the Owl Hotel. http://www.owl-hotel.nl/gb/
It's quite close to the Leidesplein (3 minute walk) and also close to the Museumplein (< 10 min).
Lots of trams intersect at both places.
Give the boys a thrill and walk them by where the prostitutes have their little "houses". BTW: the equivalent, though much smaller, can be found in most cities and towns in the Netherlands.
