"We expect that 2007's backlog of 2 million applications will not only be repeated, but actually be worse, with passport applications processing time stretching from several weeks to several months. By contrast, our online turnaround time of 7-10 days is a very attractive alternative.....

My daughter and I applied for first time passports in Jan, and had a 3 week turnaround time from application to having passports in hand. We used the US Mail and no expedited services of any kind.

I applied for a passport renewal in February 2007. It took a month and intervention from my congressman to get my passport even though I paid extra for it to be expedited. The Passport Office did, however, refund my $60 expedition fee upon written request. It was not a pleasant time for many of us trying to renew.

I applied the first part of January, 2008 and had it in 2 weeks. If you wait until March or April - who knows?

I just renewed my passport. Sent it directly to the passport office and paid for expidited service. Get my new passport exactly 1 week later. Why should you pay a processing company like American Passport Express extra to do the same thing you can do yourself?
