I would absolutely NOT have a car on the Amalfi Coast in June. I would hire a driver to get you from Amalfi to the Naples airport. Via Michelin shows a time of 2 hours from Amalfi to Naples - which is optomistic and doesn't take traffic into account.

I generally agree with the no-car crowd. However, for that one day, wouldn't it be reasonable to bus to Sorrento (or hire a driver to take you there), pick up the rental car there, and drive to Naples?

Really? Google Maps shows 67 minutes. The route is east on SS163 to pick up A3 west all the way to the airport (a 4-lane, straight, toll highway).

We hired a cab from Rovello. Driver picked us up at 4am, as our friends had a 7am, in country flight.

Can't remember how long it took, but at 4am, as you can imagine, there was no traffic.

He took a back road out of Ravello.

Cost was about 125euros, split betweeen two couples. [4 years ago]

It was very easy for us.

Downtownbrown, IMO it is never reasonable to drive to Naples.

The good news on driving a car to the Naples airport... is you don't have to drive "IN" Naples. The airport is outside (north of) the city and accessible by 4-lane divided highway. So you never have to ENTER the city of Naples.

I would agree that driving IN Naples would perhaps be YOUR worst experience in a rental car. Living in Rome, we often "drove" visiting friends into Naples and it was by far the most challenging (and most stressful) part of their visits... at least for me!

In the summer, the Amalfi roads can be packed, depending on the time of day or day of the week you're traveling. So you do have to give yourself plenty of time - sometimes easily double the time Google Maps or Michelin tell you, depending on how far down the Amalfi "highway" you are.

And when driving the Amalfi, the driver must DRIVE! No looking around! When we drive in this area, I drive to the sites; my wife drives back FROM the sites. The driver HAS to be focused on driving.

With all those hassles, I also suggest a driver - and as you would imagine - because of this there is a high proliferation of drivers and car services in this area. Google and you'll see a bunch. Like bobthenavigator, I know and work with a few.

If you're going to stay in Ravello or Positano - and you can arrange parking - having a car can be quite enjoyable. From those towns you're a little more isolated and the car is convenient - but you have to plan where you're going to, where to park, what time of day to drive, etc. A driver handles all those "logistical issues" for you - and most importantly --- EVERYONE can be admiring the "view off the cliff" --- as none of you are driving!
