Amalfi Help for 2007

Know Nth Italy but wish for 2 couples in Fifties to spend a week in an Apartment either Priano (seems cheaper)or Positano. Want to walk the Gods and be laid back cruising the Amalfi lifestyle.Australian Lira a drawback so need economical method to get from Rome International to either spot.
Are we better to pay more and be Centralised in Positano?

I rented this apartment with a friend in Praiano, take a look:
http://www.villeinitalia.com/houses/Portapenta.jsp

It is really nice, up the hill from the main road with beautiful views as you can see. Lovely owners on the property.

If you want to walk and be laid back this is an excellent place. Praiano is mostly for the locals who work and have businesses along the coast. Not much to do. Positano is much busier and more directed to tourism, also beautiful with more restaurants.

The access to the other towns are by bus which services both towns.

Cheapest way to get to the AC is by train then bus along the coastal road.

Just got back from a trip to Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. Although we loved Positano found it to be so much more commercial than Sicily and more expensive. Should look into Taoromina. We stayed at the Villa Ducale and it was wonderful. Also there is much more culturally there, ruins, etc. Also if you want to spend less, I saw the Villa Schuler which looked nice and was significantly cheaper than where we stayed.

Thanks SeaU..... I am a Chef so a good kitchen helps as I carry knives/spices etc to cook for any folk I meet along the way. Find the Italian Troops are intrigued with some of our desert/native products and it becomes a relationship cementer.
I am a little hesitant on the full touristy bit as we will stay a week a time in about 8 diferent spots from Sicily/Croatia/Slovenia/France.. This is the most "Terror Tourist" place this trip so not interested in the Capri bit but do not mind the fringes. I take it you mean quieter but still accessible to the better spots (Amalfi/Posi).

Yes, Praiano is accessable to the other towns. There is a butcher and a few grocerie stores in Praiano so you can buy fresh ingredients. As you can tell, in the kitchen is the window where you can pass the dishes through to the outside terrace like we did. The window keeps the kitchen cooler too. The owners have a lovely kitchen in their home upstairs and a full garden right beyond your terrace and fruit trees just below your terrace. We cooked up a storm in those two weeks and even hosted a party on the large terrace.

Thanks Lajolla but we are apartment people for reasons above...... I had the luxury of cruising the world as a younger person when the Aussie dollar bought something. Now I am more erudite and capacity to appreciate risen immeasurably I am on a restricted budget. alas.
